Job Description

Union School District

School Psychologist

Provides psycho educational services within the school setting for individual children for groups of children or for other aspects of the educational program.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

Consults with staff members parents and other related professional personnel to assist in meeting the psycho educational needs of pupils.

Collaborates with district personnel with regard to educational programs and practices.

Evaluates the intellectual social emotional and educational characteristics of children.

Provides the following services for special education: identification of candidates placement recommendations and assistance in planning remediation consultation with teachers and parents.

Evaluates pupils with educational and/or behavioral difficulties referred by teachers and principals. Performs functional behavioral analyses and assists in the development of behavior intervention plans.

Tests and makes recommendations regarding retention and acceleration of pupils.

Conducts triennial re-evaluations as required by IDEA 97 state law and district policy.

Participates in annual evaluation of special education students as necessary.

Does follow-up on pupils who have been referred in previous years including retention.

Serves as a consultant to counselors.

Collaborates with other related professional personnel and public agencies such as psychiatrists physicians psychologists juvenile probation welfare etc.

Participates in service training of teachers related to guidance testing learning disabilities and other related areas.

Participates in research and curriculum development.

Participates in the training program of field workers and interns on school psychology and counseling in cooperation with San Jose State and other colleges.

Participates in the planning evaluating and interpreting of group-testing program.

Counsels individually and in groups with parents and pupils to facilitate the learning and adjustment of children.

Serves as a consultant to specialists working in Special Services including special day class teachers resource specialists speech therapists and school nurses.

Participates in the evaluation of the districts special education programs and plans.

Interprets test findings to parents; counsels with parents regarding pupils potential achievement level and personality adjustment; recommends to parents ways of helping pupil or recommends sources from which they may seek further assistance of a medical or psychological nature.

Confers with teachers and principals on test findings and planning recommendations and submits appropriate written reports.

Coordinates referrals to Santa Clara County Mental Health as required.

Serves as a member of the crisis team to provide grief counseling.

Performs intellectual assessment for the determination and identification of gifted and talented students.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED AND/OR RECEIVED

Directly responsible to the Director of Special Services. Under the supervision of the school principal or designee while assigned at the school.
