Job Description

The Lead Researcher within the Cell and Tissue Imaging Centers electron microscopy facility utilizes an established skill set in electron microscopy and histology (tissue processing resin embedding ultramicrotomy & electron microscopy) to assist St. Jude researchers (principal investigators research staff post-doctoral fellows and graduate students) in achieving the results needed to advance their research goals. Performs basic workflows and experiments without direct supervision and advanced and specialized workflows with some direct supervision. The Lead Researcher will be expected to appropriately balance and prioritize efforts across multiple projects with minimal guidance. Works to further develop electron microscopy skill sets (serial sectioning low temperature and/or microwave processing protocols advanced microscopy techniques). Participates in the development of procedures and the publication of research results and may manage or be responsible for various laboratory operations. Pursues advanced knowledge in sophisticated methodology in the electron microscopy field. Performs other related duties as needed to successfully execute research projects and meet the goals and objectives of the facility.

This position requires experience in preparing and imaging resin embedded biological samples inclusive of demonstrated experience with resin ultramicrotomy. Experience in operating TEMs or SEMs is required along with a desire as applicable to expand operational expertise.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop and perform procedures using established or modified techniques/protocols
  • Implement new but established protocols without individual training
  • Troubleshoot experiments and identify anomalies in own data
  • Consistently monitors current literature and trends within field
  • Accurately record experimental procedures and data
  • Prepare and report results/ data leading to posters presentations or publications
  • Provide guidance to less-experienced team members
  • Perform other duties as assigned to meet the goals and objectives of the department and the institution.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.


Minimum Education and/or Training:

  • Bachelors degree in a relevant scientific area is required


Minimum Experience:

  • 5 years of research experience is required
  • 3 years of experience is required with a Masters degree
  • No prior experience required with a PHD
  • Strong knowledge and experience in understanding and application of underlying principles related to techniques being performed
  • Experience in R&D methods and processes in lab setting and execution of research projects for the laboratory preferred
  • Proven performance in earlier role/comparable role
  • Eligibility for employees who transitioned into were hired or accepted offers for the role before 1/5/2025 the effective date of the Lab Research Career Path Refinements will be determined based on the following criteria: Bachelors 2 years; Masters 0

Compensation

In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets experience and training licensure and certifications and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $60320 - $105040 per year for the role of Lead Researcher - Electron Microscopy.
