Organization: Compass Family Services is a 100 year old nonprofit working on the front lines of San Franciscos homeless crisis. We provide families experiencing or at risk of homelessness with comprehensive support to address immediate needs and ensure long-term success.
Salary range: $100000 - $110000 annually
Schedule: Full time Monday - Friday primarily during standard business hours

Responsibilities
The Director of Institutional Giving is responsible for all grant processes involving institutional funders including government foundation and corporate entities. The Director accomplishes this work both directly and through the management of their team of two direct reports including an Associate and a Manager.
Research Proposal and Report Writing
- Manage the research of prospects for foundation corporate and government funding to address organizational needs
- Gather information and data needed from Compass stakeholders (i.e. program staff Finance Impact Learning leadership etc.) to support grant submissions and reporting
- Ensure the high-quality writing and submission of funding proposals reports and any other requested submissions. The Director will be expected to personally prepare and manage more complex and involved submissions (usually government) with the support of the team including the Chief Development Officer
- Ensure the maintenance of the internal repository of current data and research on family homelessness and other topic areas related to Compass programs and services to be used in our case for support
- Collaborate with Finance the Chief Development Officer and other agency staff to identify budget needs and strategize how to package them in an appealing manner for funders
Grants Stewardship
- Create and maintain relationships with grant funding contacts including providing follow-up information and documentation to donors as needed
- Ensure that all foundation and corporate grants are acknowledged in a timely manner
- Set up and manage site visits by representatives of funders as needed
- Represent Compass at bidders conferences
Grants Management
- Facilitate grant orientation meetings once new grants are awarded with program staff Finance and Impact Learning to facilitate handoff from procurement to grant execution/management
- Facilitate regular grants management meetings with leads on grants/contracts and finance staff to assess progress on implementation and spending and address any issues with grant deployment
- Collaborate with Corporate Relations Manager on strategy for corporate grant funders
- Work closely with Finance to ensure appropriate expenditure and accurate financial accounting and reporting
- Ensure accurate tracking of grants revenue and provide funding information as needed to the CEO Chief Development Officer other departments and the Board
- Communicate any potential issues with grant compliance to leadership in a timely manner
Supervision
- Supervise the Grants Manager and Grants Associate manage their work assignments and ensure they are supported and set up for success
- Provide staff with regular performance feedback as well as an annual performance evaluation and support them with the development and implementation of their annual professional development plan
Administrative
- Ensure quality maintenance of database records on grant prospects submissions and deliverables
- Maintain grants files in a manner that is clear robust accessible and comprehensible to others
Leadership and Other Tasks
- Along with the Director of Development support the Chief Development Officer in building and maintaining a quality work environment for the whole Development team helping the team work together and focus on shared goals
- Represent Compass externally as needed
- Other tasks as assigned
Qualifications
- Minimum of five years of successful experience in private and government grant writing and research; management experience preferred
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Experience successfully building and managing relationship with external funders and internal stakeholders
- Strong analytical and organizational skills
- Comfort with project management and being in a leadership role
- Ability to focus on the big picture while maintaining a keen attention to detail
- Energetic self-starter able to work collaboratively as well as independently
- Comfort with Microsoft Word Excel Salesforce and experience with internet prospect research
- Flexible patient and adept at multitasking time management project management and adhering to deadlines
- Commitment to and passion for the well-being of children and families

Compensation and Benefits:
- Salary range: $100000-$110000 annually
- Paid time off: 4 weeks of vacation in your first year 5 in your second. Also paid holidays sick time family leave and time off for education.
- Insurance: health dental and vision insurance are fully covered by Compass for employees and dependent children. We also provide long term disability and life insurance.
- Retirement: after one year of work Compass contributes an amount equal to 5% of your salary into a retirement account every month; this vests during years 2-6.

- Office location: 37 Grove St. less than a block from Civic Center BART/MUNI station
- This is an on-site role. After the first three months employee may be able to work remotely one day per week pending manager approval.
