Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Facilities and Custodial Technician is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of and providing support for events at the historic Fair Lane estate in Dearborn MI. This position ensures that all interior and exterior areas are kept in excellent condition and presented to the highest addition to custodial duties the technician supports all event-related set-up and tear-down activities as directed by the Director of Facilities & Operations. The role works closely with a dedicated team of staff members year-round to preserve the estates integrity and support daily operations.


This is a FULL-TIME HOURLY position expected to work 40 hours per week.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Percentages related to duties & responsibilities are estimates and will fluctuate based on the needs of the Estate.


Custodial & Janitorial Responsibilities (70%)

  • Responsible for all building custodial tasks including but not limited to:

-Cleaning restrooms;

-Floor vacuuming and mopping;

-Trash and recycling removal (indoor/outdoor);

-Dusting of non-historical artifacts;

-Supply restocking;

-Window cleaning;

-Deep cleaning and disinfecting;

-Maintaining organized and sanitary supply storage areas;

  • Launders soiled clothing and materials using Estate-owned equipment and approved dry-cleaning vendors.
  • Ensures assigned areas meet Fair Lanes cleaning standards and requirements.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly environment to ensure the safety and health of all visitors and staff.
  • Assists with clearing walkways parking lots and driveways of debris snow and ice and trash.
  • Cleans and maintains custodial equipment such as vacuums floor scrubbers and other machinery.
  • Monitors and maintain inventory of cleaning supplies and consumables (e.g. paper products chemicals etc.).
  • Follows procedures for storage and disposal of trash and transports it to designated areas.
  • Assist in the development of cleaning and supply strategies and procedures.
  • Other duties and tasks as assigned.

Maintenance (20%)

  • Assists with the operational maintenance and monitoring of the Estate facilities including but not limited to:

-Boiler chiller and fan coil unit maintenance and repairs;

-Minor plumbing;

-Lift station operation and maintenance;

-Painting drywall repair and minor carpentry;

-Low-voltage electrical troubleshoot and repairs;

-Gutter clearing and upkeep;

-Coffee machine cleaning and upkeep;

-Operational space restoration and construction;

-Routine preventative maintenance tasks;

-Maintains supply storage areas;

  • Coordinates and oversees facilities and maintenance contractors as assigned by the Director of Facilities & Operations.
  • Communicates maintenance concerns with the Director of Facilities & Operations and assists in the development of strategies plans and procedures for the Estates short- and long-term maintenance.
  • Gains knowledge of the mechanical systems of Fair Lane.
  • Collaborates on projects with both staff and contractors.
  • Other duties and tasks as assigned.

Events (10%)

  • Event set-up break-down and clean-up including but not limited to:

-Table and chair set-up and break-down;

-Event-related trash removal;

-Stocking supplies in preparation for event use;

-Perform detailed pre-event cleaning

-Assist with audio/video equipment set-up;

-Work with vendors as needed for set-up and break-down (caterers furniture rentals floral etc.);

-Maintaining and organizing event supply storage areas;

  • May be required to work evening and weekend events as assigned by the Director of Facilities & Operations.
  • Other duties and tasks as assigned.

COMPENSATION:

This is a full-time hourly non-exempt (eligible for limited overtime) year-round permanent position with benefits. The hourly rate is $21.65 per hour and is non-negotiable; this position is eligible for overtime pay calculated at 1.5x the roles normal hourly rate but overtime opportunities will be limited. Benefits for this role include the following.

Requirements

WORKING LOCATION & SCHEDULE:

  • This role is in-person and is ineligible for remote work.
  • Expected schedule Monday through Friday with mutually agreeable start times.
  • Occasional evening and weekend work to accommodate event needs as defined by the Director of Facilities & Operations.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • A minimum of 1-2 years of maintenance and building facilities-related work experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform custodial and janitorial tasks.
  • Team Player with a strong customer service mindset.
  • Comfortable working with ladders lifts and in various weather conditions and heights including working on roofs.
  • Think critically while proactively performing all facility tasks.
  • Must demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills; customer service oriented.
  • Must be organized detail-oriented self-motivated and able to multitask.
  • Familiarity with work order or maintenance tracking systems.
  • Knowledge of OSHA standards and safety best practices.
  • Ability to perform a variety of duties often changing from one task to another of a different nature without loss of efficiency or composure.
  • Must be able to follow basic safety procedures and precautions due to physical risks and exposure to hazardous chemicals.
  • Some knowledge of Microsoft Office programs is a plus.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds occasionally and 35 pounds regularly; work outside in unfavorable conditions; perform manual labor requiring considerable walking lifting reaching climbing stooping pushing pulling and carrying. Prolonged periods of standing.
