Summary
The Protection & Compliance Engineer will play a dual role supporting regulatory compliance and protection system engineering. The position focuses on helping maintain adherence to NERC NPCC and NYSRC reliability standards by assisting in the development of procedures documentation and audit responses as well as contributing to standards reviews and monitoring parallel the engineer will support the design and maintenance of protective relaying systems including relay schemes drawings settings and testing. This role offers a balanced opportunity to gain experience in both technical engineering and regulatory compliance within the electric utility industry. #LI-VB1
Responsibilities
- Provide responsible engineer function in support of a limited range of design modification projects equipment applications and failure research engineering studies and operations and maintenance activities.
- Perform site visits to observe construction and administer on-site technical support.
- Perform occasional emergency response including outside of normal business hours.
- Coordinate work with other disciplines and departments for the successful development and execution of projects.
- Perform research on applicable codes standards and procedures and apply it to work tasks appropriately.
- Perform inspections and evaluations to ensure engineering requirements and Authority specifications are satisfied.
- Perform slightly more complex engineering tasks and is capable of recognizing abnormal variances of results.
- Develop a basic understanding of NYPA generation and transmission systems.
- Run computer analyses and perform calculations as required and reports results.
- Get involved in design work
- Work with greater independence however projects are assigned by Manager/Director or Senior Engineers.
- Complete work under moderate supervision receiving advice and guidance from Senior Engineers.
- Perform system disturbance analysis and recommending protective relaying system modification and/or additions if required.
- Interface with manufacturers consultants professional organizations regulatory and standardizing bodies to maintain familiarity with and stay conversant with the requirements of power system protection and control.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Basic competency in the design operation and maintenance of Protection and Control systems specific to the electric utility industry.
- Competent in the use of Microsoft Office applications.
- Basic verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to effectively manage and prioritize multiple projects with guidance.
- Familiarity with applicable codes standards and regulations.
- Ability to perform basic engineering calculations and adapt standard specifications scopes of work reports and design packages to specific projects.
- Develop a better working knowledge of the Authoritys engineering and operating policies practices and goals and the electric utility industry.
- Demonstrated proficiency using NYPAs engineering software.
- Ability to draw conclusions based on data analyses.
- Ability to interpret results and in some instances make recommendations.
- General engineering knowledge and a basic understanding of the utility industry.
- Awareness of NYPAs related activities and operations. For example familiarity with a per unit system.
Education Experience and Certifications
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent from an accredited college or university.
- Minimum of two (2) years related work experience preferred.
- Strong understanding of power system theory.
- Exposure to electric utility industry preferred.
- Able to sit for the Fundamental of Engineering exam.
Physical Requirements
Approximately 25% travel primarily within NY State.
