Job Description

New York University (NYU) Berlin is seeking a part-time lecturer to serve as lead instructor for a course entitled Stanislavski Brecht and Beyond. The course is the principal component of a three component one-semester program in theater and actor training for advanced drama students offered by NYU Berlin in conjunction with the Tisch Department of Drama and in affiliation with faculty from the Academy of Dramatic Arts Ernst Busch Berlin the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK) and other local institutions. The three components are Actor Training German Language and a course on the history of contemporary German Theater Practice: Dramaturgy Production Dramatic Literature and Theory. The course will run from the middle of January 2026 until the middle of May 2026.

The overall goal of the program is to enable students to create and perform realistic theater that balances full physical and emotional embodiment with critical distance while actively interfacing the dramatic story with the theatrical context. The course includes the integration of the Russian-based Stanislavski Method of Physical Action/Active Analysis with Brechts Epic Theater and Elements of Post Dramatic Devised Theater taught in three blocks throughout the semester and accompanied by movement and voice training as well as rigorous actor-oriented dramaturgical research. Each of the three phases will culminate with workshop performances of the studied plays and scenes. This integrated approach aims to strengthen and deepen the students presence on stage and their ability to create performances that are intellectually informed viscerally exciting and theatrically courageous. The lead teacher for this course will work with a roster of four instructors and will teach one of the core course modules. Additionally the instructor will introduce each consecutive instructor and module and support transitions from one module to the next drawing a connective through-line across the various modules which will include master classes and workshops. The instructor will work with the other instructors to select scenes for each module in collaboration with the Program Director.
