Position Title: Police Officer Recruit
Classification: Non- Exempt
Department: Police Department
Reports To: Patrol Sergeant
Starting Salary: $70040; increase to $72141.20 upon academy completion
General Purpose:
The purpose of this position is to enforce state and municipal laws in order to ensure the safety of the Citys citizens and to perform duties in accordance with State Statutes and established departmental policies procedures and guidelines.
Reporting Relationships:
Supervision received: The Police Officer recruit works under the direction of the Patrol Sergeant Field Training Coordinator and or a Field Training Officer.
Examples of Essential Job Functions:
- Observes and learns to enforce state and local laws and ordinances under supervision.
- Demonstrates ability to communicate effectively with the public and within the department.
- Completes administrative tasks including daily reports logs and training documentation.
- Prepares to assume full peace officer duties upon successful completion of training and certification.
REQUIREMENTS
A. Age Requirements:
- Must be at least 21 years old or
- 18 years old with a minimum of 60 semester hours from an accredited college/university.
B. Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. or
- Have served 24 months active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces and received an honorable discharge.
C. Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to read and write the English language.
- Ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
- Ability to perform a variety of physically demanding maneuvers and activities while involved in law enforcement and rescue operations including running climbing lifting defensive tactics and operating in high-stress or hazardous environments.
- Ability to accept responsibility and account for his/her actions.
- Ability to follow instructions safety practices and standard operating procedures in performing assigned tasks.
- Ability to work effectively with people regardless of their age gender race ethnicity religion or job type.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing
- Ability to use thinking and reasoning to solve a problem.
- Ability to be truthful and be seen as credible in the workplace.
- Ability to make decisions or take actions to solve a problem or reach a goal.
- Ability to think critically and make sound decisions using available information beyond routine solutions.
- Ability to influence others to perform their jobs effectively in a team environment and to be responsible for making decisions.
- Ability to overcome violent resistance and apprehend and arrest law violators.
- Ability to accurately describe suspects and vehicles
- Skill in use of personal computer including Microsoft Office or similar word processing programs email and the internet.
- Skill in vehicle operation.
- Skill in firearm use.
D. Licenses and Certification:
- Must have or be able to obtain a valid Texas drivers license maintain a good driving record and retain eligibility throughout employment.
- Must be able to obtain basic certification by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).
E. Special Requirements:
- This position is classified as a safety-sensitive position and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing during the course of employment.
- Must pass a pre-employment oral interview board background investigation psychological exam physical examination and drug screen.
- Must successfully complete required leadership and command training programs.
- May be required to work evenings weekends and holidays as needed.
- Be a citizen of the United States
- Must successfully complete an oral interview board.
- Must submit the following additional documentation: Personal History Statement (PHS) birth certificate high school transcript college transcripts (if applicable) and DD-214 (if prior military service).

Physical Ability
- Frequent exposure to hazardous conditions infectious diseases and physically demanding environments.
- Requires continuous effort with moderately heavy materials; includes lifting carrying stooping bending standing walking running crawling and crouching.
- Must be able to operate vehicle in routine and emergency conditions.
Sensory Requirements
- Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors.
