Brief Description of Duties

Incumbent functions as a Rehabilitation Counselor in the Accessibility Resource Center in the Student Wellness Cluster Division of Student Development and Success. The incumbent reports to the Director of the Accessibility Resource Center and as such performs the following duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Analyzes reports containing medical and psychological data and interprets the relationship of such data to the educational needs of students with disabilities.
  • Uses computer software in data collection and record keeping.
  • Assists in the recruitment orientation and registration of disabled students informing them of the educational opportunities at the University of the District of Columbia.
  • Provides comprehensive rehabilitative counseling to students with various types of physical learning and psychological disabilities.
  • Plans and evaluates the daily operations of disability services.
  • Maintains current and up-to-date records of individual counseling sessions with students receiving disability services.
  • Maintains individual students academic and services rendered records.
  • Consult with faculty in the provision of reasonable accommodations.
  • Arrange and coordinate services and outreach programs that meet the needs of students with documented disabilities.
  • Prepares and submits necessary budgets and reports.
  • Assists with or serves on university-wide committees.

Other Duties:

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Local travel between campuses.
  • Maintains relationships with agencies (i.e. RSA DDS) to keep abreast of activities and services for students with disabilities.
  • Floating team assignments as needed. Floating teams are groups of individuals with specific skill sets that come together for a specific project/activity period. Based on necessity an individual can be assigned to more than one team simultaneously.


Minimum Job Requirements

Education

  • Masters degree in Rehabilitation Counseling Counseling Vocational Education Vocational Rehabilitation or related field.
  • Certified Rehabilitation Counselor and/or Licensed Professional Counselor preferred.

Experience

  • Three -five years of counseling experience in higher education workingwith students with disabilities.
  • Proficiency with Assistive Technology Adaptive Aides and various computer-based software.
  • Proficiency in counseling skills counseling theory and ethics as outlined in the American Counseling Association (ACA).
  • Experience in providing rehabilitation counseling services and supportto diverse populations.
  • Experience working with advanced degree-seeking students in the higher education setting.
  • Strong oral written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to interact appropriately with faculty staff administrators students and other stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of pertinent federal statutes laws rules and regulations and policies applicable to state federal and University mandates.
  • Knowledge of EEO laws and employment and industry trends.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by AFSCME local 2087 and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants unless the person declines the preference points. If selected the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.


Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988 the individual selected to fill this position will as a condition of employment be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor in writing not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation. The determination of a satisfactory backgroundinvestigation is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia. The University may refuse to hire a finalist rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
