The Rail Car Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient movement inspection loading unloading and general handling of rail cars in a railyard or plant environment. This role requires strong attention to detail adherence to safety protocols and coordination with team members to ensure timely and accurate rail car operations. The operator will work closely with supervisors logistics personnel and other team members to support rail transportation and product handling needs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Operate rail car moving equipment (e.g. locomotives rail car movers) to position and move cars for loading and unloading.
Inspect rail cars before and after movement for damage safety issues and load integrity.
Couple and uncouple rail cars; secure cars using hand brakes chocks or derails as needed.
Communicate with team members yardmasters and dispatchers using radios or hand signals.
Load and unload materials from rail cars using appropriate equipment and tools while following all safety procedures.
Ensure accurate tracking and documentation of rail car locations numbers and contents.
Monitor and test brakes valves and other mechanical systems on rail cars as needed.
Perform basic maintenance or cleaning of rail equipment and track areas.
Assist in identifying and responding to potential safety hazards or mechanical issues.
Follow all regulatory environmental and company-specific safety standards and policies.
Requirements:
High school diploma or GED preferred.
Minimum of 12 years of rail car industrial or heavy equipment operation experience.
Must possess a valid drivers license or state-issued ID.
Ability to read and interpret work orders safety guidelines and operating procedures.
Strong communication skills and ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
TWIC Card.
Must be able to work in various weather conditions and physically demanding environments (climbing lifting walking on uneven surfaces).
Ability to pass a drug screen background check and physical examination.
