The Mechanical Engineer owns the mechanical design analysis and continuous improvement of AC induction motors and electro magnetic brake systems. Youll apply advanced structural and thermal analysis rotating equipment design principles and motor cooling strategies (TEFC ODP custom enclosures) to launch new products and upgrade existing platforms. This is a hands on role that collaborates closely with Electrical Engineering Manufacturing Quality and Supply Chain while mentoring junior engineers on best practices and standards.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Design & Development
Engineer frames brackets rotors housings mounting interfaces and brake integrations.
Generate/maintain 3D models detailed drawings and BOMs using SolidWorks & AutoCAD.
Engineering Analysis
Perform and document:
a. Critical shaft speed / modal vibration analysis.
b. Lamination stress fatigue life and factor-of-safety reviews.
c. Thermal modeling and heat dissipation strategies for multiple cooling schemes (TEFC ODP custom).
d. Bearing fit load lubrication and life calculations.
Cooling System Design
Specify and validate cooling paths fan systems and enclosure features tailored to duty cycle and environment.
Optimize airflow and temperature rise to meet NEMA/IEEE performance limits.
Compliance & Documentation
Ensure designs meet ANSI/ASME standards GD&T requirements and internal design control procedures.
Apply NEMA MG 1 relevant IEEE standards and Navy MIL SPECs for severe duty motors.
Support ISO 9001 documentation ECOs and manufacturing work instructions.
Cross Functional Collaboration
Partner with Manufacturing/Operations to support prototype builds DFM/DFA reviews and root cause investigations.
Present design reviews; provide clear technical communication to non mechanical stakeholders.
Mentor junior engineers/drafters; review their work for accuracy and compliance.
Continuous Improvement
Drive value engineering weight/cost reductions and reliability upgrades on legacy product lines.
Champion standardization of components and best practices across product families.
Required
Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering (or closely related discipline).
10 years mechanical design experience with rotating machinery/equipment.
Demonstrated expertise in motor cooling systems (TEFC ODP custom enclosures).
Proficiency in SolidWorks and AutoCAD; working knowledge of FEA tools for structural/thermal analysis.
Strong command of ANSI/ASME standards GD&T and mechanical tolerancing.
Working knowledge of NEMA MG 1 applicable IEEE standards and Navy MIL SPEC requirements.
Experience integrating electro magnetic brakes with motors and mitigating vibration.
Familiarity with ISO 9001 quality systems and manufacturing process documentation.
Preferred/Bonus
Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Experience with RMxprt Motor CAD or similar motor analysis software.
Hands on testing experience (thermal vibration noise).
Exposure to UL/CSA/ATEX certifications.
Proven track record leading cross functional projects and mentoring teams.
