Cranbrook Video-Journalist (English Services)
Your role
CBC British Columbia is seeking a skilled storyteller and shooter/editor to fill a 12-18 month parental leave contract. The successful candidate will also be a creative thinker with strong community connections who brings original ideas and treatments to the newsroom and has demonstrated skills in shooting and editing news. You embrace a culture of inclusion and understand the diverse and changing population in Cranbrook and the East Kootenay Region and the importance of reflecting all our communities in our content. Under the general direction of the Executive Producer for the B.C. Interior you will operate as part of the daily CBC News B.C. team in the region to research gather package and present media for CBCs platforms including digital video and radio. You will use community connections to pitch and produce original stories and tell news stories using text and creative visual and audio elements.
The work must adhere to CBC journalistic standards and practice (JSP) as well as being aligned with our programs and platforms. There is wide latitude for initiative independent judgement and creativity. You must adhere to CBCs Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest at all times.
Please note the regular work schedule of this permanent full-time position includes Monday-Friday with some weekend work; schedule flexibility is required.
Your profile:
Graduation from University or Community College in a relevant course of study or equivalent industry experience.
Three to five years directly related experience in a professional broadcast facility.
Comfortable and dynamic on-air presence.
Excellent interviewing and storytelling skills.
Knowledge of the issues events and communities important to people in the Kootenay region and neighbouring communities.
Ability to write clearly and concisely.
Proven ability to work independently and with editorial teams across the province
Track record of breaking news and quick turnarounds
Excellent critical thinking skills
A proven commitment to delivering information on digital platforms
Proven ability to generate compelling story ideas and knowledgeable contacts
Ability to field gather and edit on a smartphone or similar in-field device.
Knowledge of field filing programs (e.g. Hindenburg Dejero).
Flexibility to work regularly for television digital platforms and/or radio.
Relevant experience in shooting and editing.
Highly creative imaginative problem solver and motivated self-starter.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Strong desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
Experience with AVID polopoly or other content management tools for digital is an asset.
Possession of a valid drivers licence as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canadas insurance company.
Valid passport ability and willingness to travel.

At CBC British Columbia we work as one team. Although you will work in the newsroom (office provided by the CBC) you will be expected to work closely with the radio current affairs programs to ensure that the best of your work is shared widely with the audience.
Key Tasks:
Writes for a variety of platforms including digital social media radio and television
Gathers compelling high-quality video photographs and audio on scene in a variety of
situations
Monitors developing news through a variety of sources
Arranges and conducts interviews
Develops and maintains relationships with a wide variety of key sources
Edits material for use on all platforms
Stays on top of the latest social media tools to find contacts and story idea
Decides which elements should be included in a story their order length and sequence as well as the method of transition from one element to another.
Prepares aligns sets up and operates various camera equipment ensuring optimal video
audio and technical quality under prevailing conditions.
Lights the subject or scene and composes program visual material using a hand-held
camera. Ensures that the material produced meets the technical and aesthetic requirements
for editing.
Edits recorded items on appropriate/available editing systems.
Prepares and writes scripts continuity and headlines.
Reports the story either on camera or in voice-over form.
