Job Description

QUALIFICATIONS: Shall hold a valid South Carolina certificate in guidance and counseling at specified levels: Shall possess highly developed human relations and communication skills.

Shall possess personal qualities of objectivity caring tact empathy sincerity tolerance and emotional stability. Shall have had successful experience or training in the diagnosis of learning and behavioral problems of children.

REPORTS TO: Principal

JOB GOALS: To provide appropriate services to all students in K-6 that will enable each to achieve optimally. To provide services for students to prevent the development of potential problems and concerns. To provide remedial services to assist students in coping with problems which interfere with academic achievement and appropriate behavior.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Responsible for budget recommendations to ensure that sufficient funds are requested to carry out the objectives of the guidance program

2. Responsible for proper utilization of budget funds

3. Responsible for identifying guidance needs of students

4. Provide a written guidance plan

5. Works to provide activities to enhance the personal social and emotional development of students

6. Provide indirect services for students through coordination with teachers

7. Improvement of academic achievement through enhancement of student self-concept

8. Student behavior management plans

9. Provide indirect services for students through coordination with parents:

10. Parent study groups

11. Early identification of academic achievement

12. Makes referrals to district office staff or community agency for students in need of special services

13. Provide students with direct services to meet their needs:

14. Availability to students and parents throughout the school day

15. Group guidance on topics of general need

16. Group counseling on topics of small group need

17. Individual counseling for confidential concerns of students

18. Emphasis on developmental/preventive guidance and counseling

19. Contribution to students academic achievement through services in the affective domain

20. Assistance to students for improving class-room behavior and peer relationships

21. Responsible for periodic evaluation of guidance services

22. Responsible for annual program evaluation with administrator

23. Responsible for securing evaluative feed-back from staff parents and students

24. Responsible for strengthening program by incorporating appropriate

25. Responsible for maintaining proper certification

26. Responsible for continuing professional growth through:

27. Graduate level course work

28. Membership and participation in professional organizations

29. Participation in State Department of Education workshops and conferences

30. Expanded knowledge and expertise through regular reading of current periodicals and books

31. To build on a childs strengths

32. To meet needs of acceptance warmth and caring

33. To develop positive attitudes about self and school

34. To promote positive social interaction with peers and authority figure

35. To develop self-discipline self-motivation and academic achievement

36. To provide an opportunity to talk about concerns (personals social academic vocational)

37. To teach decision-making and problem-solving skills

38. To teach study skills and thereby reduce poor achievement

39. To reduce poor attendance

40. To reduce inappropriate behavior

51. Referrals to community agencies and community services to the school

52. Services the counselor provides to help - teachers parents and students

53. Classroom and community career education

54. County district and community guidance-related consultant services

55. Registration and orientation with feeder/receiver schools

56. New student/teacher orientation

57. Conferences with parents; parents/teachers/ student/parents; students/parents/teachers

58. Serve as school test coordinator for standardized testing program

59. Guidance public relations

60. Active membership in professional organizations

61. Participation in professional organization conferences and Department workshops to update professional skills

62. Additional graduate courses to expand expertise

63. Coordination with media specialist regarding affective AV and print materials needed for counselor and classroom use

64. Recommendation of affective books for the staff professional library

65. Appropriate use of private office space telephone group counseling space

66. Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal.

67. Works with others consistently in a cooperative and respectful manner.
