Description

As part of the Departments of Theatre & Dance and Music reporting to the Department Chair(s) the Musical Director will provide piano accompaniment for the Theatre and Music Performance programs assisting with the instruction of student instrumentalists and vocalists during the academic year. On occasion they may be required to provide accompaniment and coaching for faculty performances other department ensembles and campus functions.
Major Areas of Responsibility
Theatre & Dance Department:
  • Serve as the Musical Director for Theatre Departments musical production which will include:
  • Accompanying auditions in September
  • Playing for rehearsals approximately 15 hours a week from mid-October through early December and during a one-week intensive retreat for the Musical in mid-January
  • Conducting the Pit Band during rehearsals and performances
  • Mentoring and instructing student musicians and vocalists
  • Collaborating with the Director and Musical Director
  • Play piano for Singing for the Broadway Stage class (Fall semester)
  • Play piano for Voice and Speech class (Spring Semester)
  • Provide weekly individual vocal coaching and instruction for the aforementioned classes
Music Department:
  • Provide accompaniment for students studying in the Performance Program supporting rehearsals and lessons with additional coaching and instruction in collaboration with professors
  • Perform in department/studio recitals performance forums juries master classes and auditions
  • Perform in student Junior and Senior recitals (Spring semester)
  • Perform in campus functions that are supported by the Music Department
  • Perform additional duties as assigned; duties responsibilities and activities may change at any time with or without notice
Minimum Qualifications
  • D.M.A. or PhD. in Music or equivalent in education and experience
  • Experience and training in playing and performing on a professional level in all musical styles
  • Significant background coaching and or teaching student musicians and vocalists
  • Expertise to learn music quickly and perform at a high level with minimal rehearsal
  • Excellent sight-reading skills including the ability to read orchestral and choral scores
  • Ability to adapt quickly in rehearsals and performance to interpretations that may differ from what was prepared
  • Flexibility to work professionally with ensemble directors and faculty/staff in the Departments of Theatre & Dance and Music as well as other campus departments
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a high level of motivation
  • Ability to make an impact through work as a member of a team and diverse community
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to balance a flexible work schedule
