Job Description

Minimum masters degree with valid Tennessee teaching license required. Must have one of the following endorsements: 086 (School Counselor K-8) or 487 (K-12 Counselor). This is a 205 day position. See below for the job description and more information.

  1. Masters Degree
  2. Valid Tennessee counseling certificate with appropriate endorsement.
  3. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

JOB GOAL

To help students overcome problems that impede learning and to assist them in making educational occupational and life plans that hold promise for their personal fulfillment as mature and responsible men and women.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Remain readily available to students to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth self-understanding and maturity.
  2. Work with students on an individual basis or in small groups in the solution of personal problems related to school home health and emotional adjustment.
  3. Assist students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data.
  4. Obtain and disseminate occupational information to students.
  5. Assist students in planning a course of study and evaluating career interests.
  6. Assist in identifying options for students with educational handicaps.
  7. Work cooperatively with community agencies (i.e. juvenile court human services public health mental health and vocational rehabilitation) to meet the needs of students requiring assistance.
  8. Take an active role in interpreting the schools objectives to students parents and the community at large.
  9. Confer with parents whenever necessary or as requested.
  10. Select administer and interpret standardized tests to assist students in making appropriate career and/or college choices.
  11. Collaborate with high school guidance counselors in the sharing and dissemination of graduation requirements and college scholarship information.
  12. Develop a school-wide program and schedule for group testing.
  13. Administer or supervise the administration of group tests of intelligence achievement aptitude and interest.
  14. Attend faculty meetings and other meetings called by principal supervisor or superintendent.
  15. Prepare various reports as designated by the principal.
  16. Perform such other duties as may reasonably be prescribed by the principal or his/her designee.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This job may require lifting of objects that exceed 25 lbs. Other physical demands that may be required are as follows:

CAPACITY AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS

  1. Specific capacities and abilities may be required of an individual in order to learn or perform adequately a task or job duty.
  2. Intelligence: The ability to understand instructions and underlying principles. Ability to reason and make judgments.
  3. Verbal: Ability to understand meanings of words and the ideas associated with them.
  4. Numerical: Ability to perform arithmetic operations quickly and accurately.
  5. Manual Dexterity: Ability to move the hands easily and manipulate small objects with the fingers.
  6. Form Perception: To make visual comparisons and discriminations and see slight differences in shapes and shadings of figures.
  7. Color Discrimination: Ability to perceive or recognize similarities or differences in colors or shades or other values of the same color.
