What You Can Expect
As a Licensing and Education Officer youll play an important role in supporting the integrity and accountability of Ontarios bereavement sector. Youll coordinate licensing activities for new and renewing professionals and guide applicants through the regulatory landscape to help them meet all legislative requirements. Beyond licensing youll oversee education and examination programs like managing internships administering exams and tracking competencies in order to ensure those entering the profession are fully prepared. Through clear communication precise processing and timely support youll play a vital role in upholding high professional standards and fostering fair consistent access to licensure and practice across the province. Reporting to the Manager Licensing and Education your strong attention to detail sound judgment and problem-solving skills will support consistent standards and contribute to public trust in the sector. The ideal candidate will bring clear communication critical thinking and a commitment to fair thorough decision-making.
What Youll Do
Personal Licensing
- Review candidate applications to ensure they meet licensing requirements based on their specific applicant type.
- Assess all initial and renewal applications for completeness and accuracy ensuring all required documents are submitted.
- Process and issue licenses and licensing packages.
- Handle special license-related requests including status changes and interprovincial mobility.
- Maintain both digital and paper records to track the progress of licensing applications and support timely processing and decision-making.
- Serve as the first point of contact for general inquiries related to licensing procedures and legislative requirements referring complex matters to appropriate staff or management as needed.
- Provide backup support to other Licensing Officers and contributes to organization-wide projects initiatives and governance-related activities.
- Assistwith scheduling and administrative duties including travel arrangements and coordination of licensing-related activities.
Licensing Pathway and Exam Administration
- Coordinate with educational institutions to identify eligible internship candidates process applications update internship statuses and issue relevant documentation.
- Verify that Preceptors meet the required qualifications.
- Confirm that interns have completed all required competencies using the internship support portal.
- Coordinate and administer the Entry-to-Practice examination in collaboration with internal and external partners.
- Maintainaccurate records for examination tracking including for candidates applying from outside Ontario.
- Manage all examination-related accommodations notifications and confirmations for eligible candidates.
- Issue examination result letters and facilitates
revaluation processes when necessary.
- Collaborative assignments to meet operational priorities.
What You Bring to the Role
- Experience interpreting and applying legislation policies or procedures within regulatory or compliance settings particularly related to licensing and education processes
- Strong analytical ability and attention to detail to assess complex information and ensure accuracy throughout application and examination reviews
- Commitment to delivering accessible respectful and responsive service tailored to the needs of diverse applicants and stakeholders
- Effective communication skills with diplomacy and tact to engage applicants educational partners and internal teams while resolving inquiries and concerns constructively
- Highly organized able to manage multiple priorities meet deadlines and maintain consistency and quality in compliance-related work
- Collaborative mindset working respectfully within diverse teams and across departments to support shared goals and smooth operations
- Sound judgment in decision-making and escalation knowing when to seek guidance or involve management on complex or sensitive matters
- Comfortable using Microsoft Office (Teams Word Excel) and other business technologies with adaptability to new systems and platforms
- Assets that strengthen your contribution include familiarity with delegated administrative authorities (DAAs) knowledge of the bereavement sector bilingualism in English and French and experience supporting regulatory education or enforcement functions in an administrative role.
About the BAO
The Bereavement Authority of Ontario (BAO) is a government delegated authority and not-for-profit corporation administering provisions of theFuneral Burial and Cremation Services Act 2002(FBCSA).Accountable to the Minister of Public and Business Service Delivery and Procurement and the government the BAO is responsible for the protection of the public interest. The BAO regulates ensures compliance with the law provides resources and services to licensed:
- Funeral establishment operators directors and preplanners;
- Cemetery crematorium and alternative disposition operators;
- Transfer service operators; and
- Bereavement sector sales representatives across Ontario.
The BAO is wholly funded by licensee fees (not tax dollars).
