Animal Caretaker Part-Time Weekends
Introduction: George Washingtons Mount Vernon is seeking a highly motivated individual for part-timeemployment in the Livestock Department. This position is responsible for thegeneral care and safety of all livestock including horses sheep cattle pigs and poultry. The candidatewill be required to work in period costume using the livestock to demonstrate 18th-century farming techniques for our one million annual guests. Compensation: $15.00/hour Expected Hours: This position requires the ability to work weekends. Hours are Saturdays and Sundays from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Position Specific Responsibilities: - Responsible for the daily care of all animals to include feeding inspecting administering medications and grooming
- Prepares for livestock interpretations and actively interprets with animals in period costume
- Interprets in period costume from April to November performing numerous tasks including but not limited to plowing cultivating and harrowing with horse teams sheep shearing with hand shears working with oxen sowing and harvesting crops and assisting with wheat treading demonstrations.
- Positively engages with our young guests during educational school programs
- Assists veterinarians and farriers during scheduled appointments
- Ensures barns shelters and pens are properly cleaned and maintained
- Provides a positive visitor experience with accurate and exciting historical interpretation
- Assists with maintaining daily records of livestock activity
- Performs other related duties as requested
Preferred Qualifications: - At least one year of equine and/or livestock experience
- Ability to lift 50 pounds and spend extended amounts of time standing walking and bending
- Ability to work in all weather conditions
- This position is deemed essential and candidates must report during inclement weather
