High School Visual Arts Teacher

University School of Nashville invites qualified candidates to apply for a position teaching high school ceramics. Responsibilities include teaching 3 sections of ceramics specifically beginning and intermediate/Advanced ceramics courses that focus on handbuilding wheel and sculpture. Participating collegially in meetings and initiatives of both the Arts department and of the high school as well as taking an active role in the life of the school community are key expectations as well.
Art teachers at USN believe that visual art is a universal tool for communication and is a fundamental component of the human spirit. With this in mind the chief goal of the Visual Arts program is to foster student familiarity with creative expression through a variety of different media and materials. The ideal candidate loves to work with students of all levels of artistic ability. This person promotes independent thinking risk taking and will strive to bridge social economic and cultural boundaries through arts discourse personal inquiry and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Qualifications include a bachelors degree in Fine Art or a closely related field art teaching experience (preferably at the high school or collegiate level) the ability to teach students at a variety of proficiencies and a demonstrated capacity and desire to teach across multiple disciplines media subject areas. An appreciation and desire to support high school students and their development is critical as is successful experience working within a diverse school community.

Candidates should be knowledgeable of research on how implicit biases in race ethnicity gender identity and socioeconomic class can shape curricula and pedagogy classroom culture and student outcomes. Candidates should be able to translate that knowledge into demonstrable actions that promote equitable and just teaching and learning.
The School
University School of Nashville is an independent non-sectarian co-educational day school with enrollment of over 1000 students in kindergarten through twelfth grade. In 1915 the George Peabody College for Teachers opened Peabody Demonstration School USNs predecessor which earned acclaim for its curriculum and faculty. In 1974 Peabody College announced plans to close PDS and a group of parents alumni students and teachers reconstituted and re-chartered the school as University School of Nashville.
USNs midtown location adjacent to Vanderbilt University and its Peabody College for Teachers reminds us each day of our beginnings over 108 years ago in the demonstration school culture of innovation and educational best practices.
