Job Description

Description

A plant operator is responsible for ensuring the safe operation of plant equipment. The Plant Operator also ensures routine and preventative maintenance of this equipment. Responsible for the safe and proper operation of a chillers boilers hot water heaters and ancillary equipment necessary for their proper operation and control of building systems. Maintains plant operating logs and prepares rounding reports on equipment at each mechanical room. Prepares equipment malfunction reports makes inspections and observations and determines whether equipment is operating properly. Ensures proper cleanliness of all mechanical rooms including painting of such rooms and the marking of all piping.



Responsibilities
  • Technical Tasks
    • Work with team members to meet established safety environmental operating and maintenance goals and objectives.
    • Successfully complete all required safety and environmental training and participate in the facilities Safety Committee.
    • Perform operational activities required to support start-up shutdown and normal operation of plant equipment and systems.
    • Complete required electrical switching and tagging of plant equipment and systems in accordance with approved facilities lockout procedures industry guidelines and prudent operations and maintenance practices.
    • Perform assigned preventative maintenance corrective maintenance emergency maintenance and inspection of plant mechanical and electrical equipment.
    • Complete routine cycle chemistry testing and make the necessary adjustments needed to operate within the established facility operating parameters.
    • Perform required field adjustments of plant equipment and systems to ensure that equipment operates in accordance with established operating parameters and environmental permit requirements.
    • Comply with all site safety requirements to identify and make corrective actions necessary to eliminate potential safety hazards in the facility.
    • Operate station vehicles such as forklifts trucks man lifts and overhead cranes.
    • Monitor the daily consumption of bulk chemicals and consumables required to operate the facility to ensure proper inventories to support anticipated operating profiles. Initiate timely re-ordering of chemicals and consumables to eliminate impacts to plant operations.
    • Utilize the facilities computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to document and track the maintenance request/work orders and actions completed on plant equipment and systems.
  • Critical Thinking
    • Report equipment conditions or other facility anomalies that could affect the plant status to the Plant Management Leadership Team
    • Make entries in the operating logs environmental records and other administrative documentation needed to support the operation and maintenance of the facility.
    • Respond to abnormal operating situations in a safe and environmentally conscious manner.
    • Comply with all site safety requirements to identify and make corrective actions necessary to eliminate potential safety hazards in the facility.
  • Other Duties as Assigned
    • Other duties are performed as assigned.


Qualifications

Experience
5 years of experience as a Plant Operator Technician or equivalent experience in an operating plant.

Education
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.

Special Skills
Knowledge of and ability to understand fundamental principles related to physics mathematics AC & DC electrical theory heat transfer and fluid flow thermal dynamics and chemistry. Knowledge of power plant safety policies and procedures especially in areas such as chemical handling high-energy systems lockout tag-out confined spaces incipient fire suppression first aid rotating machinery and heavy equipment.
