Job Description Summary:

The Director of Accounting and Financial Reporting/Assistant Controller is responsible for providing guidance support and expertise within Institutional Finance including oversight of both the Control and Reporting department and the Student Financial Accounting department. Reporting directly to the Associate Vice-Chancellor-Controller the Director of Accounting and Financial Reporting serves as the lead for accounting and reporting functions within the Institution. The ideal candidate is highly collaborative and excels in building and managing relationships.

Job Description:

Job Duties:

  • Perform advanced accounting work utilizing a centralized accounting system for the University.

  • Mange/oversee the Control and Reporting Department and the Student Financial Accounting Department.

  • Develop and build relationships with employees for increased efficiency in existing operations.

  • Develop appropriate internal control policies and procedures.

  • Serve as a subject-matter expert developing and managing key financial policies related to financial partnerships with related entities such as The University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) KU Endowment Association (KUEA) KUMC Research Institute (RINST) and other affiliated entities.

  • Oversee the development and review of timely and accurate financial reports for KUMC.

  • Work to define new operational strategies by working with the Financial Controller and other executives on special projects.

  • Act as the contact point for the independent auditors examinations and audits.

  • Maintain current knowledge of GASB FASB and other GAAP pronouncements that affect the University.

  • Create business processes systems and workflows to be efficient and effective.

  • Drive projects forward provide structure and resources to leaders across KUMC.

  • Make data-driven decisions.

Required Qualifications:

Education: Bachelors degree in Accounting Finance Economics or related degree. Education may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Work Experience:

  • Eight (8) years of relevant work experience.

  • Experience supervising staff and managing a department.

  • Experience with financial statements debt offerings cash and internal controls.

  • Knowledge of GAAP GASB and FASB as demonstrated by application materials.

Preferred Qualifications:

Education: CPA or masters degree in related field.

Work Experience:

  • Fifteen (15) years of relevant work experience.

  • Experience using ERP financial and reporting systems to analyze data and make informed decisions.

  • Experience with large complex organizational settings.

  • Big 4 public accounting experience.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to education experience and training qualifications relative to the requirements of the position and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
