JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Dance Division at Texas Womans Universityinvites applications for a one-year full-time Visiting Assistant Professor of Dance position starting must have an M.F.A. in dance or Ph.D. in dance or a closely related field and be actively engaged in a combination of rigorous physical practice creative process and theoretical inquiry.

Strong applicants will demonstrate a commitment to excellence in studio teaching contexts such as contemporary dance practices improvisation choreography pedagogy somatics and screen dance in addition to the potential to teach introduction to movement analysis and dance history at the B.A. level. They will also have an active research agendain choreography and or performance with a record of regional and national presentations. Furthermore strong candidates will demonstrate the interest and potential to engage in active service to the division university and profession. A demonstrated ability to work with a diverse multi-ethnic student bodyis a must.

The position would involve teaching a full-course load primarily in the B.A. program with potential courses in the M.F.A. program as well depending on the visiting faculty members areas of expertise.

This position is a great opportunity for someone interested in developing their teaching and their research interests in a supportive department through teaching courses around those research interests as well as potentially creating choreography with student dancers around those research interests.

The salary range depending on qualifications for the 9-month position is $55000 and includes full benefits.

DIVISION DESCRIPTION: The Division of Dance offers the B.A. M.A. M.F.A. and Ph.D. degrees. The mission is to prepare students for the dance professions (artists educators researchers leaders/administrators) in a student-centered teaching/learning environment that values individuality diversity and community. Core values guiding the realization of the mission include:

1) a commitment to the empowerment of women through education

2) the value of a liberal arts education for all persons and

3) a fundamental belief in the primacy of experience and process. The Division of Dance is contemporary dance-centered and serves a diverse population of approximately 85 undergraduate dance majors and 50 graduate students; 46% of our undergraduate majors are dancers of color primarily Hispanic and African American students.

Faculty staff dance musicians and graduate teaching assistants work together to create an interdisciplinary and cooperative environment that fosters the development of individual creative voice encourages risk-taking and provides diverse artistic and academic opportunities. Interdisciplinary artistic and research enterprises have long been an integral part of the Division of Dance at TWU and are encouraged through School of the Arts and Design and TWU funding initiatives. The members of the Dance faculty maintain strong collaborative working relationships with colleagues in other academic areas particularly Womens Studies and the School of the Arts. This year marks the Ph.D. programs 67th year!
