About the Adler Planetarium

The Adler Planetarium connects people to the universe and each other. Whether introducing a guest to the Ring Nebula a neighborhood school to a community partner a research team to a network of citizen scientists or one staff member to another the Adlers focus on meaningful connections dates back nearly a century.


Today the museum typically hosts more than half a million visitors annually and reaches millions more through youth STEAM programs neighborhood skywatching events online citizen science and other outreach efforts. With Adlers support people of all ages backgrounds and abilities gain the confidence to explore their universe together and return to their communities ready to think critically and creatively about any challenge that comes their way.



The Position

The Adler Planetarium is seeking a Digital Experience Technician to join our dynamic team on Chicagos Museum Campus. They build and maintain Adlers digital experiences and theater equipment to create a cohesive connected set of guest experiences that strengthen its mission. They create a framework for innovative future-proofed experiences going beyond mere technology maintenance. The Digital Experience Technician ensures that guests and staff benefit from high-quality reliable digital technology and collaborates across the organization to co-create consistent coherent and meaningful guest engagement in astronomy and space science in line with Adlers brand and mission. This individual will also be responsible for:


  • Performing daily operations and repairs of digital experiences and theater equipment. Potentially supervising any such repairs performed by contractors or other departments and providing technical support for public programs private events internal meetings and other projects. Training staff in the use of digital equipment. Occasionally we conduct theater shows in response to staffing needs.

  • Participating as a digital experience and theater specialist in relevant phases of exhibit production and guest experience projects storyboarding planning budgeting purchasing vendor management and launch. Designing programming and implementing digital experiences and technology on the museum floor.

  • Working with the Digital Experience team to plan implement and document a modernized stable digital environment on the museum floor. Staying current on trends and advancements in digital technology and immersive experiences expanding networks beyond the museum community.



The Work Schedule

The typical work schedule for this position is 35 hours per week Sunday-Thursday or Tuesday-Saturday from 8 AM to 4 PM. The schedule may shift to evenings/weekends depending on event coverage and setup needs. Holiday coverage will alternate between this role and other team members. Overtime may be occasionally necessary to support events or to support emergency equipment repair in our theaters or digital spaces.



The Compensation & Benefits (Full-Time)

Base Pay Range: $28.00 - $30.72/hr

The Person

A successful Digital Experience Technician approaches work from a place of preserving or improving the guest experience and Adlers ability to fulfill its mission. They respect our guests by ensuring the output of their work is the best they can produce.


Required Qualifications:


  • High School diploma or GED

  • 1-3 years building interactive applications like websites games apps or digital support tools.

  • 1-3 years documented experience with JavaScript HTML CSS and Windows computing environments.

  • Some knowledge of Python SQL and the Linux computing environment.

  • 3 years documented experience with performing computer repairs including diagnostics soldering cabling and other related skills.

  • Some experience learning legacy technologies from minimal documentation.

  • Basic knowledge of the Mac computing environment.

  • Some experience working diagnosing and interfacing with video projectors.

  • Ability to effectively troubleshoot technical problems.

  • Strong documentation and communication skills ability to learn legacy technologies from minimal documentation resourceful detail-oriented with strong problem-solving and diagnostic process

  • Basic knowledge of circuitry soldering and creating signal flow charts.

  • Proficiency in typical office technologies such as MS Office Suite Google GSuite web searching and collaborative software.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Bachelors Degree in Computer Science Computer Engineering Physics

  • 3 years building interactive applications like websites games apps or digital support tools.

  • 4 years documented experience with JavaScript HTML and CSS.

  • 1-3 years documented experience with Python and SQL.

  • 1-3 years documented experience with networked computer environments.

  • 4 years documented experience with Windows computing environments.

  • Some knowledge of media playback theater controls video projectors audio equipment or Unreal Engine.

  • Some experience working diagnosing and interfacing with sound and lighting systems.

  • Documented experience with technical project management and external vendor management.

  • Some experience working on project teams

  • Some experience with public speaking
