Job Description

Cathedral of Mary Our Queen located in Homeland area of Baltimore is seeking candidates for an Organist/Accompanist. This year-round position is defined as part-time working 19 hours/weekly. Expectation of attendance is for the Saturday Vigil Mass Sunday 11 am Mass choir rehearsals Holy Days of Obligations and other special liturgies of the Cathedral e.g. Lessons and Carols Ash Wednesday All Saints and All Souls Days. The work is done collaboratively with the Director of Music Ministry. As a part of the musical leadership team of the Cathedral the Organist is expected to assist in recruitment and training.

Essential Functions

  • Provide organ accompaniment for the Saturday Vigil Mass Sunday morning choir Mass choir rehearsals and other special Cathedral liturgies e.g. Lessons and Carols Ash Wednesday All Saints and All Souls Day liturgies etc.
  • Assist the Director of Music Ministry in recruiting Catholic musicians for liturgies on an ongoing basis.
  • Knowledge of the instrument and keyboard ability sufficient to play hymns songs and anthem accompaniments. Ability to sight-read and improvise required.
  • Fill in for the Director of Music Ministry in his/her absence.
  • Work with instrumentalists for special liturgies e.g. Christmas and Easter.
  • Rehearse with cantors/ensembles/instrumentalists prior to each liturgy.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of an Archdiocesan music library.
  • Attend liturgical formation sessions as requested by the Director of Music Ministry.
  • Assist with set up and break down after each liturgy and formation event.
  • Assist with planning of execution of Cathedral Concert Series.
  • High degree of competence on organ and the ability to accompany groups and individuals.
  • Knowledge of basic music theory and ability to perform simple transpositions or harmonizations.
  • Willingness to rehearse sufficiently to maintain a high quality of music.
  • Coordinate piano and organ maintenance.
  • Operational knowledge of Cathedral sound system.
  • Sensitivity and the ability to interact with a variety of people.
  • Ability to take direction and work as a team member.
  • Ability to communicate well and in a friendly manner with the church leadership church music ministers and members of the congregation.
  • Desire to maintain a constant program of self-improvement.
  • Meet with wedding couples to select appropriate music for wedding liturgies.
  • Additional duties & responsibilities as assigned.

Position Qualifications

  • Roman Catholic in sacramental union with the Church.
  • Degree in Music and Liturgy or equivalent of 2 years of experience in a similar position.
  • Necessary reputation and ability to assist in recruiting choral personnel and instrumentalists.
  • Thorough knowledge of organ technique and repertoire.
  • Knowledge of Roman Catholic liturgy and various styles and periods of liturgical music.
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite Finale (or other music notation software) InDesign (or other desktop publishing program).
  • Ability to conduct instrumental and choral ensembles when necessary.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Experience in Catholic worship with both organ and other music and hymnody.

Pay Rate: $26000 Annually
