Main Purpose of Job
MSD Cook II is an intermediate level of work in the Dietary Department of the Maryland School for the Deaf Columbia Campus. The Cook II is responsible for the production and serving of meals in accordance with the facilitys Food Safety Program and Wellness Policy; all Maryland School for the Deaf Columbia Campus and Dietary Department prescribed policies and procedures; and all applicable health and sanitation regulations and standards.
POSITION DUTIES
Prepares foods requiring both simple and complex preparation.
Assembles traylineand serve meals according to established scheduled daily menu using correct portion sizes andtechniques.
Cleans and sanitizes work areas and equipment.
Prepares food itemssuch as vegetables salads meats and beverages by baking frying broilingsteaming and mixing in accordance with recipes and dietetic guidelines.
Applies good serviceprinciples and methods related to food handling proper food storage andtemperature control.
Operates kitchenequipment and appliances such as mixers cookers ovens stoves toasterscoffee urns microwaves and related equipment.
Cleans and maintainsutensils and work area in accordance with applicable safety and sanitarystandards.
Protects equipmentutensils food and other items from contamination spoilage and pilferage.
Keeps records ofsupplies used and number of persons served.
May train assign andreview the work of Dietary Workers or Food Service Assistants in cookingtechniques.
Performs other related duties must be flexible to provide timely assistance for an efficient food service operation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: None.
Experience: Three years of experience in food preparation at a public or governmental establishment such as a restaurant hospital or comparable institution involving the cooking of meats and vegetables and the preparation of salads and beverages.
Notes:
may substitute graduation from an accredited vocational/technical high school with a major in food service or a related field for up to two years of the required experience.
2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a non-commissioned officer in culinary classifications or food service specialty codes in the food preparation and serving field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Must be proficient inor willing to learn ASL.
Must be able to lift50 pounds and stand for extended periods of time.
Serve Safe food handlercertification preferred.
LICENSES REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Candidates must be willing to become Serve Safe Certified.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

BENEFITS
Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage accidental death and dismemberment insurance and life insurance but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
Leave may be granted to a contractual employee at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
