Job Description

Job Title: Material Lab Microscopist
Job Location: Auburn Hills MI

Job Duration: 3 Months Contract to Hire

Job Summary:

  • The Material Lab Microscopist will be performing laboratory testing of materials on a daily basis.
  • This will include metallography mechanical properties and non-destructive evaluation.
  • The candidate should have a strong basis of the fundamentals of material science & engineering enjoy working in a laboratory environment and working with their hands. Knowledge of steel cast iron aluminum plastics and composites are essential.
  • An understanding of processes such as heat treatment casting welding and injection molding and the effects on the properties on materials are also essential.
  • The candidate must have a background in metallographic techniques with the ability to interpret microstructures of cast iron cast aluminum and steel.
  • The candidate should also have knowledge of fracture analysis using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) interpreting fracture topography to determine fracture origin loading direction fracture type and abnormalities in the material.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Perform metallography and laboratory testing of material samples
  • Prepare samples for testing
  • Investigate failures/fractures; provide images and analysis to support root cause analysis and issue resolution
  • Support routine maintenance of laboratory equipment

Qualifications:

  • BS degree in Metallurgy Materials Science or closely related field
  • Minimum 5 years of experience working a materials lab performing metallography using an optical microscope and fracture analysis using scanning electron microscopy
  • Experience performing failure analysis on various metal (steel aluminum etc) components including sample preparation (cutting/grinding/polishing)
  • Knowledge of metallography materials characterization
  • Experience on a range of optimal microscopy and photographic equipment in a laboratory setting
  • Experience with Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)
  • Experience or training with quality control methods (problem solving root cause analysis)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Optional Skills:

  • Knowledge of automotive components and materials
