Job Duties

What We Do:
At the Chesapeake Health Department we are dedicated to preventing illness promoting healthy lifestyles and protecting the environment for all citizens of Chesapeake. We are seeking a full-time Human Resources Assistant to join our small Human Resources Team. This position will perform administrative tasks and services to support effective and efficient operation of the districts human resources department. What Youll Do:
Welcome new employees to the organization by conducting new employee orientation. Answer frequently asked questions from applicants and employees relative to standard policies benefits and hiring processes.
Assist with day-to-day operations of human resource functions and duties and provide clerical human resource support. Assist in explaining and providing information on employee benefits programs and education.

Maintain the integrity and confidentiality of human resource files and records and ensures accurate and up-to-date human resource files records and documentation. Perform periodic audits of HR files and records to ensure that all required documents are collected and filed appropriately. Process documentation and prepare reports relating to personnel and general human resource activity. Keep up-to-date with the latest human resource trends and best practices. Provides backup technical and executive level administrative support. Work regularly requires discretion interpretation of policies procedures or processes and strong calendar management and scheduling skills.

We are a part of the Virginia Department of Health (VDH); a state agency that works to protect and improve the health of people in Virginia. The VDH central office is located in Richmond Virginia. Local public health departments are spread throughout the state and support counties cities and/or regions in which they reside. The goal of VDH is to become the Healthiest State in the Nation. We work with the City of Chesapeake to provide public health services to the Chesapeake community. We are located in the Great Bridge area of Chesapeake at 748 Battlefield Blvd.

Minimum Qualifications

General knowledge of human resource programs regulations and guidelines
Ability and experience applying applicable policies and procedures
Ability to prepare process track and file personnel records
Knowledge and experience with administrative and clerical processes and procedures
Strong computer oral and written communication and organizational skills
Ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines
Ability to maintain confidentiality

Additional Considerations

Training in Human Resources or related field
Experience working in a Human Resources office for a large complex agency
