Job Title: Senior Meteorologist

Locations: Can be located out of one of our corporate offices in OrangeCT Augusta ME Rochester NY or Kirkwood NY

The salary range for this position is dependent on location and experience level ranging from $94490 to $129924.

Job Summary

Avangrid Service Company is seeking a Senior Meteorologist. This position is a key member of Avangrids Emergency Management Department supporting Avangrids preparedness to severe weather and climate change. As the leader of the departments Weather Forecasting and Analytics Unit this position works in a fast-paced environment where forecast accuracy and operational decision-making is critical to ensuring Avangrids Operating Companies are prepared for severe weather. This onsite in-office position located within the Avangrid service territories reports to the Director of Emergency Operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Utilize expertise in weather science and forecasting to develop accurate and actionable forecast products to ensure Avangrids Operating Companies are prepared for severe weather.
  • Provide forecast briefings to operational leaders executives and senior executives before and during severe weather events.
  • Utilize expertise in regional and national climatology to inform long-term planning and strategies relating to climate change mitigation.
  • Provide strategic leadership in the advancement of the Emergency Management Weather Forecasting and Analytics Unit.
  • Provide subject matter expertise in the creation of testimony and filings associated with regulatory hearings and matters.
  • Oversee the Companys portfolio of external weather vendors including reviewing vendor performance recommending improvements and management of budget contracts and invoices.

Required Qualifications

  • A masters degree in meteorology climatology or related field.
  • 3 years of operational forecasting including reviewing forecast data and discussions to develop forecast products for non-meteorological audiences.
  • Experience managing budgets contracts and invoices associated with vendors and/or third parties.
  • Superior communications skills and ability to translate complex meteorological phenomena for response personnel.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to handle a faced-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • a PhD in meteorology climatology or related field.
  • 5 years of operational forecasting including familiarity with the Avangrid service territories and local environmental tendencies.
  • Experience managing other meteorologists and/or data scientists.
  • Familiarity with the utility industry and the use of AI/ML to predict weather outcomes including outage prediction modeling.
