Job Description

Be a Star at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts!

The Community Engagement Instructor (Musical Theater) is a musical theater-based practicing artist and educator who possesses a strong commitment to working with children teens adults and educators. This position may teach in all aspects of the Arts Education Partnership Program Professional Development Workshops Day @ the Straz Field Trip Program and other instructional based programming as assigned.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for the planning and execution of educational arts programming appropriate for specific age groups. (Pre-K through Adult).
  • Instructing students in one or more of the following theater arts disciplines: acting improvisation playwriting movement vocal production musical theater or technical theater production.
  • Provides each student with an evaluation (either verbal or written) with specific feedback and recommended future course of study should they seek further interest.
  • Submits course descriptions as requested to the Community Engagement Department and Theater Department.
  • Attends professional development sessions and staff meetings.
  • Works with the Community Partnership Coordinator on program site scheduling and curriculum.
  • Carries out administrative responsibilities (such as: submission of written lesson plans assessments teaching schedules program forms and other duties as assigned).
  • Participates in pre-planning and post-planning meetings with Partnership Site Staff and Community Partnership Coordinator.
  • Acts as an ambassador and serves as a community representative to speak on behalf of the Community Partnership Program at community functions as requested.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge Skills and Abilities):

  • In-depth knowledge and expertise in musical theater and performance.
  • Professional artist working within field of expertise within the last five years.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated practice of effective classroom management strategies to maintain a safe and effective learning environment.
  • Strong communication skills (both verbal and written).
  • Demonstrated leadership ability.
  • Effective prioritization and multitasking skills.
  • Collaborative decision-making skills in a team environment.
  • Detail oriented with ability to effectively manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Availability to work a flexible schedule which may include nights and weekends.
  • Must have reliable transportation be able to drive a car and have appropriate auto insurance coverage and a valid Florida Drivers license.
  • Must be able to pass a level 2 fingerprint screening.

Education and Work Experience:

  • Bachelors degree in Theater Performance Theater Arts or related field.
  • Applicable certification or significant training and/or performance experience required.

  • While performing the duties of this job the employee is required to perform physical activities that require constant use of arms and legs and moving the entire body to ascend descend traverse and position self to handle materials (such as props costumes etc.). The employee is frequently required to remain stationary; use hands arms communication to express oneself (required for performance teaching listening to music choreography etc.).
  • Must have ability to move boxes of promotional and ticketing materials for short distances.
  • The nature of this job requires the employee to work on-site as a regular work routine.
