Job Description

Shelter Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT)
Location: Auburn Valley Humane Society
Pay Range: $28.00/hour $32.00/hour
Classification: Non-Exempt (Hourly)
Reports To: CEO of Operations and Animal Care
Driver Role: As Needed

Auburn Valley Humane Society (AVHS) and Northwest Spay & Neuter Center are committed to enriching the lives of companion animals and the people who love them through animal sheltering high-quality veterinary services and community engagement. Together we strive to set the standard for excellence in animal welfare.
At AVHS we only contract with the City of Auburn and maintain a target capacity of around 50 animals to ensure quality care. Our facility includes partialized kennels for improved housing and enrichment two outdoor play yards and a robust volunteer base that supports daily operations. Dogs are walked at least three times per day and enrichment is built into our routines to support behavioral wellness. We believe in compassionate progressive care and we value our people as much as the animals we serve.
Position Summary
The Shelter Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) plays a vital role in providing high-quality compassionate medical care and humane handling that aligns with Fear Free principles and AVHS protocols. The LVT supports daily shelter operations and medical care ensuring each animal receives excellent treatment and support.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform intake exams and administer vaccines parasite control and initial diagnostics.
  • Support veterinarians with surgeries treatments and procedures.
  • Administer and monitor anesthesia including intubation.
  • Handle and administer controlled substances under appropriate oversight.
  • Follow disease control protocols and ensure a clean safe environment.
  • Communicate clearly with staff and volunteers regarding animal health and behavior.
  • Maintain medical inventory and order supplies as needed.
  • Work collaboratively across departments in support of overall shelter operations.
  • Stay current on internal communications and protocols.
  • Provide daily care to shelter animals including feeding hygiene enrichment and exercise.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Must be licensed in the State of Washington as a Veterinary Technician.
  • Demonstrated passion for animal welfare and alignment with the AVHS mission.
  • Must pass a pre-employment background check and drug screening.
Preferred Experience and Skills:
  • Prior experience as a veterinary technician or assistant; shelter or high-volume spay/neuter clinic experience preferred.
  • Ability to handle fractious or fearful animals safely and humanely.
  • Strong communication skills with diverse teams and the public.
  • Able to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Attention to detail and strong recordkeeping skills.
Computer Skills:
  • Comfortable using or learning shelter software and online systems.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
  • Frequently required to stand walk lift up to 50 pounds reach bend or stoop.
  • Able to work flexible hours including some weekends and evenings.
  • Daily work in a shelter environment with exposure to animal smells sounds and behavior.
