We are seeking a full-time Laboratory Manager for the Regional Genetics Diagnostic Laboratory (GDL) to join a vibrant collegial and respected team in the Regional Genetics Program based at the Childrens Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) in Ottawa Ontario Canada. The Laboratory Manager is responsible for the oversight and management of the daily operations of the laboratory through implementation of the established Quality Management System and supervision of laboratory personnel. Reporting to the Director of Precision Health and the Regional Genetics Program the Laboratory Manager will work in partnership with the Laboratory Director and the Chair of the Department of Genetics to maintain high-quality clinical service and develop and implement a multi-year strategy to ensure ongoing innovation.

The Regional Genetics Program at CHEO provides diagnostic testing counselling and therapeutic services to individuals and families dealing with genetic conditions. We serve a population of approximately 1.4 million in Eastern Ontario Western Quebec Nunavut and parts of Northern Ontario. The GDL provides comprehensive molecular and cytogenomic testing for both pediatric and adult populations for a range of disorders including those related to cardiac cancer and hematological conditions. A wide variety of methodologies are routinely used for genome-wide analysis such as: karyotyping SNP microarray next generation sequencing (e.g.: targeted panels whole genome/exome sequencing) FISH and optimal genome mapping.

Our laboratory is accredited by Accreditation Canada Diagnostics is a partner in Genome-wide Sequencing Ontario and the cytogenetics section is approved by the Childrens Oncology Group (COG) in pediatric oncology.

Our mandate is to provide clinical and laboratory services through all stages of life (preconception prenatal pediatric and adult) and we strive to provide answers for every family at all stages of life. We are home to thriving postgraduate teaching programs (RCPSC residency in Medical Genetics & Genomics and CCMG fellowships in Biochemical Genetics and Genetic and Genomic Diagnostics) and strong research programs across multiple domains of genetics. The GDL is an affiliated clinical site for both the Michener Institute and BCIT Genetics Technology Programs.

POSITION SUMMARY

  • Plan develop and implement innovative effective and efficient laboratory services in collaboration with Laboratory and Program Directors.

  • Ensure that procedures are performed in accordance with accreditation and safety standards and hospital policies.

  • Recruit manage and evaluate competency and performance of laboratory personnel and maintain an effective training program for staff.

  • Support staff in accomplishment of service goals and objectives continuous improvements and to provide effective leadership and project management for the improvement of operations and processes.

  • Assist with development and management of laboratory budget including staffing supplies equipment and purchased services.

  • Maintain personal professional development by attending workshops conferences and courses related to goal achievements and performance enhancement

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 8-10 years relevant experience in an accredited laboratory (Preferred)

  • A minimum of 5 years of progressive leadership experience (Essential)

  • Project management and facilitation experience (Essential)

  • Demonstrated sound understanding of organizational learning and change management (Essential)

  • Demonstrated knowledge of budget planning resource allocation financial monitoring and reporting (Essential)

  • Demonstrated experience in LEAN and/or continuous quality improvement in a healthcare organization (Essential)

  • Demonstrated effective relationship building with the ability to effectively coach interact and problem solve with service providers senior leaders and team members for the effective resolution of contract related and performance issues (Essential)

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and proven ability to deal effectively with internal and external clients/stakeholders (Essential)

  • Exceptional ability to communicate effectively and concisely both orally and in writing (Essential)

  • CMLTO Licensed Technologist with a designation in clinical genetics cytogenetics or molecular genetics OR affiliated degree in genetics with demonstrated laboratory experience (Preferred)

  • Expert knowledge of genome sequencing cancer genomics laboratory automation and clinical bioinformatics (Preferred)

  • Thorough knowledge of the laboratory regulatory environment (Preferred)

  • Proficiency in both English and French (Preferred)

Nous desservons une population denviron 14million de personnes dans lest de lOntario dans louest du Qubec au Nunavut et dans certaines parties du nord de lOntario. Le LGD effectue des tests molculaires et cytognomiques complets pour les populations pdiatriques et adultes et pour un ventail de troubles de sant dont ceux lis des problmes cardiaques de cancer et dhmatologie. Une grande varit de mthodologies sont couramment utilises pour lanalyse du gnome comme le caryotypage le test SNP par microchantillons le squenage de nouvelle gnration (p. ex. capture de cibles squenage complet du gnome/exome) le test FISH et la cartographie optique du gnome.
