Job Description
Student Advising & Education 50%
  • Provide individual career advising to students regarding the job or internship search process; including resumes/CVs interviewing letter writing networking salary negotiation and other career preparation areas.
  • Provide advising and resources for students pursuing admission to graduate school as well as educational resources for those seeking career paths in other areas such as entrepreneurial ventures.
  • Lead or co-lead career-related programing on the topics outlined above; e.g. an interviewing workshop.

Experiential Learning & Networking Programs 20%
  • Collaborate with staff on student experiential learning and networkingprograms connecting students with employers such as job shadowing career road trips and industry nights.
  • Independently lead and plan one career road trip and one industry night.

Employer Recruiting Events 10%
  • Collaborate with staff to assist with events like the Career Fair and Next Day Interviews
  • Gain basic skills with a career management system (used to facilitate employer registration fee collection student information.

Employer / Alumni Development 10%
  • Provide support to established partners as needed or appropriate.
  • Assist with the cultivation of new employer & alumni prospective relationships.

Other 10%
  • Collaborate on or manage participant report data from various types of programs - design collect and analyze.
  • Gain a basic understanding of various marketing tools and social media.
  • Gain an understanding of the career readiness competencies for the workplace.
  • Learn how to implement career readiness competencies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule

Position Overview
The KU Engineering Career Center (ECC) supports School of Engineering students with high-quality career information connections and educational opportunities as they explore evaluate and pursue their professional goals. The ECC serves both undergraduate and graduate engineering and computing students. As a member of the Engineering Career Center team the Graduate Assistant will primarily focus on student career advising and education; however in addition will explore and participate in most aspects of career services. This is an .5 FTE (20 hours per week) academic year position reporting to the Assistant Director of the Engineering Career Center. Primary hours are Monday through Friday between 8-5 although occasional evening hours may be requested.

Position Requirements
During the semester term of the appointment the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

Employment Conditions
(1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.

(2) This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
