Job Description

***This school has been designated underperforming or chronically underperforming (formerly Level 4 or 5) by the State of Massachusetts. ***

Position Overview:

The Director of Multilingual Learners (ML) will assist the leadership of the school in leading developing implementing and evaluating comprehensive ML programs for students from grade 9-12. This role is critical in ensuring equitable educational opportunities academic success and cultural integration for Multilingual Language Learners. The Director will improve the quality of instruction for all Multilingual Language Learners assist in the professional development activities for both regular special education and ESL staff and contribute to the overall culture of the school as an agent of change committed to progressive educational reform and meeting the needs of all students in a rigorous academic environment.


Reports to: Head of Schools

Responsibilities:

  1. Leads and oversees the design implementation monitoring and continuous evaluation of all ML programs and curriculum activities including all formative and summative testing.
  2. Ensures program compliance with district state and federal guidelines.
  3. Delivers department leadership that provides clear and consistent excellence and accountability and advocates for inclusion and rigorous academic preparation for all ELLs.
  4. Oversee the proper scheduling and instructional placement of MLL students.
  5. Work with staff members both in the classroom and in professional development opportunities to support differentiated instruction.
  6. Assist in planning the implementation of school instructional initiatives and practices to support alignment of learning standards with effective teaching practices.
  7. Model co-teach and observe in classes.
  8. Provide feedback and suggestions to support both Vocational and Academic teachers in their efforts to provide accommodations lesson modifications and support to a range of learners.
  9. Provide professional development activities for all Vocational and Academic teachers to improve instruction for all ML students.
  10. As a member of the school district leadership team supports improved achievement for all students and collaborates to close student achievement gaps.
  11. Implements and utilizes appropriate technology resources to support data-based decision making and instructional strategies.
  12. Stays current and informed in policy and best practices in ML education and attends and participates in professional development and informational meetings hosted by the DESE and professional organizations.
  13. Oversee the implementation of curriculum and distribution of instructional materials for the schools ML programs as well as other content areas to support alignment of best instructional practices and strategies.
  14. Design and implement grants that support ML staff and students.
  15. Articulates the goals and objectives of the ML program to the community through collaboration with parents community advocates and students to foster school-home- community engagement and partnership.
  16. Maintain responsive lines of communication among students parents and staff.
  17. Engage in recruitment and outreach work to support ensuring that parents and students across the city know about Madison Park unique programming.
  18. Serves a member of the ILT to support alignment between the schools instructional vision and CPT and PD spaces.
  19. Collaborate with other Directors ( of Special Education Director of Student Support Services Director of Curriculum Instruction and Professional Learning and Vocational Directors) to implement supports and modifications for students.
  20. Develop foster and maintain integration of learning across all instructional areas career guidance and special services to ensure students efficiently acquire relevant 21st century skills
  21. Assist the Principal with budgetary planning and processing requests for supplies materials and equipment
  22. Assist in administrations of all required assessments.
  23. As directed by the Head of School or designee supervise and direct the work of teachers and support staff including evaluation of their performance.
  24. Support school leadership in the hiring of ML teachers and support staff.
  25. Perform other responsibilities as designated by the Head of Schools.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Masters Degree in education with a concentration in Sheltered English Instruction Administration and/or a related field
  2. Massachusetts Supervisor/Director license or Administrator of Sheltered English Instruction Provisional with Advanced Standing or Standard
  3. Five (5) years teaching and managerial experience
  4. Massachusetts teacher license in Sheltered English Instruction
  5. Experience and training in the supervision and evaluation of teachers/as a professional developer
  6. Demonstrated leadership qualities interpersonal skills and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students teachers administrators and parents
  7. Ability to establish a diverse multi-cultural atmosphere that enhances individual growth and promotes a positive self-image
  8. Experience with and/or knowledge of educational reform
  9. Experience with and knowledge of advising programs
  10. Knowledge of MA Curriculum Frameworks Vocational Frameworks and Assessments


Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience in working with students during transitions (orientations moving to college)
  2. Experience developing or working within both an inclusion model and a learning center model
  3. Interest in working in fast-paced environment and ability to manage multiple responsibilities with humor and enthusiasm

Terms: BASAS Group 9A 209 Days

The BASAS contract year runs from September 1 through August 31. All BASAS members are must work 183 school days with teachers. The additional days beyond the 183 school days shall be agreed upon with your supervisor. These days shall be considered non-scheduled work days and should be coded by your supervisor or secretary as S6500 in the timesheet. The additional days may be fulfilled before during or following the school year all work must be completed between September 1 and August 31.
