BASIC FUNCTION:

The Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintenance repair and installation of some building equipment fixtures and systems. This individual is a vital member of a team that relies upon direction from the supervisor individual initiative and cooperation between others. The maintenance technician must be willing to assist other team members and contribute to the goals of the department on a continual basis

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Facilities and Campus Services (FACS) Maintenance the incumbent works collaboratively and independently to perform the following essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Provide effective maintenance and repair of most campus building structures fixtures equipment and related record keeping to include semi-skilled and skilled maintenance and repairs in various trades including electrical carpentry plumbing painting and preventative maintenance. This position includes an emphasis on plumbing including fixture and pipe unclogging maintaining and associated cleanup as well as repairing plumbing supply fixtures. Includes a higher level of plumbing knowledge and experience to help lead the Maintenance team to a higher plumbing proficiency and ability to perform more plumbing work in-house.
  • Complete campus work orders in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Report progress and completion by writing in the work order database and verbally as needed.
  • Respond immediately to campus emergency calls during normal duty hours as needed.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance on equipment owned and operated by Claremont McKenna College.
  • Perform shop maintenance and daily clean-up.
  • Periodically inspect campus buildings for quality of appearance safety problems vandalism and makes suggestions for improvements to Supervisor.
  • Assist Supervisor with parts research orders purchases and pick up parts and tools as directed.
  • Work with Supervisor to establish and maintain records of procurement including parts and supplies specific to CMC Maintenance.
  • Use plumbing experience and knowledge to help guide the Maintenance team with plumbing repairs and maintenance throughout campus.
  • Work with Supervisor to learn CMC HVAC computer controls and assist in the management adjustment troubleshooting and improvement of controls.
  • Work with Supervisor and HVAC Controls vendor to monitor schedules setpoints setbacks forced points broken links alarms and other anomalies in campus EcoStruxure and FMCS software.
  • Assist Supervisor with some of the computer and office elements of the Maintenance sup-department of Facilities department.
  • Occasionally assist in sets-up and support annual campus events or moves as needed.
  • Participate in workshops seminars or training sessions (as approved) that advance new techniques and will enhance the performance of the employee and the operation of the department.
  • Perform other essential duties and tasks specific to the position and as requested by Supervisor.
  • May train and work with temporary employees in daily assignments or other related duties.
  • A mix of office and in-the-field maintenance work that may vary day-to-day and week-to-week.

Regular attendance is considered an essential job function; the inability to meet attendance requirements may preclude the employee from retaining employment.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:

EDUCATION: Any combination of education training and/or experience equivalent to a high school diploma GED or that provides the required knowledge skills and abilities.

A minimum of three to five years of plumbing/construction or facility maintenance experience with increasing responsibility in installation and repair of plumbing systems is required.

LICENSES: A valid drivers license is required to drive college-owned vehicles and the ability to be insured under the Colleges authorized drivers policy.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to stand walk bend climb push pull stop twist stretch squat reach and lift up to 50 pounds from floor to above shoulder level without assistance. This is primarily a heavy work classification with employees working in various campus buildings and in utility and service areas. The position requires continual walking lifting and grasping; frequent climbing balancing stooping kneeling and crouching; exposure to dirt dust and noise. Finger dexterity is required to operate equipment. Position is occasionally required to work around chemical electrical and mechanical hazards. Must take and successfully pass a functional capacity test after job offer and prior to hire.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS and ABILITIES: Individual must possess knowledge skills and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed with or without reasonable accommodation using some other combination of skills and abilities.

  • Residential and commercial grade plumbing experience required.
  • Basic mathematical computation skills.
  • Basic computer literacy including MS Word Excel Outlook.
  • Proficiency in computer work to learn and use new programs specific to the job.
  • Correctly use safety equipment as required and provided.
  • Basic knowledge of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) electrical plumbing carpentry and general building maintenance.
  • Knowledge of common tools material and equipment used in basic maintenance duties.
  • Knowledge of and constant practice of safe work practices relating to ladders power tools machinery electricity carpentry and plumbing and everything done on campus.
  • Good organizational skills and follow-through.
  • Effective communication and problem solving ability.
  • Ability to interpret and apply a variety of rules regulations and procedures.
  • Work in cooperation with co-workers supervisors students staff and faculty.
  • Effectively manage multiple priorities and work well under pressure of deadlines.
  • Complete work requests and other related forms in writing.
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships demeanor and image.
  • Adapt to a fast-paced and changing environment.
  • Plumbing/construction certifications are encouraged.
  • Backflow certification and knowledge preferred
  • Operate the Colleges vehicles safely for campus-related work and meet all insurance-related requirements.
  • Must be able to understand and follow basic instructions in English both orally and written.

OTHER:

REQUIRED HOURS: The regular hours for this position are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Regular hours may vary due to needs of the College or department. Must be willing and able to work overtime including weekends holidays and evening work hours.
