Definition of Classification:
The Omar E. Robbins Endowed Chaplain fosters a culture of community belonging inclusion and supportive environment for students staff faculty administrators and campus community members of all faiths and none encouraging personal and spiritual intersectional identity exploration and empowerment pluralism ethical leadership and reflection interfaith engagement building bridges across difference through sustained dialogue restorative justice and conflict resolution transformative healing sense of purpose and joy career and professional vocational discernment and mindfulness in support of cultivating a beloved community dwelling place holistic community wellbeing community care intergroup understanding and respect. Through programmatic pastoral counseling community support celebration of signature memorials vigils events and programs advising of faith-based religious and spiritual-based student clubs organizations and mission-driven societal impact through interfaith service leadership and civic engagement the inspirational Chaplain will be an engaged leader providing personalized student and community engagement educational and skill development trainings workshops and speaker engagement opportunities in partnership with on and off campus partners. A member of the Division of Student Affairs in the Office of Inclusion and Community the Chaplain will serve the University of Redlands system community serve as the University liaison and partner to local and regional interfaith organizations and the University of Redlands spiritual-based club and organization advisors. This 9-month hourly position works a minimum of 15 hours and up to 20 hours per week during the academic year. Evening and weekend flexibility required to ensure support for signature events and programs and community support for unforeseen campus crises or tragedies. This position is primarily located in but will provide support to all campuses as needed.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Spiritual Leadership and Compassionate Pastoral Care:
- Provide confidential spiritual care to all students staff faculty administrators and community members across religious spiritual and secular identities and none honoring diverse belief systems practices and identities.
- Assist and support all students faith-based religious and spiritual student clubs/organizations and non-athletic teams staff faculty administrators and community members during community campus crises tragedies and/or flashpoints requiring expanded community especially student-facing support.
- Serve as a clearinghouse for spiritual or religious-based resources education and programming and administer University policies for community ministries in partnership with Campus Life.
- A staff member in the Office of Inclusion and Community the Chaplain helps guide institutional awareness of religious and spiritual needs contributing to a culturally responsive spiritually grounded and personalized relationship-driven campus climate where every community member is valued matters and belongs.
- Supports fostering a community culture of belonging and psychological safety of students and ensuring parity in the student experience and education consistent with the Universitys Mission Statement the Anti-Racist Statement and Institutional and Student Affairs Divisional Strategic Priorities
Interfaith Engagement:
- Support student spiritual and religious clubs/organizations and affinity groups through advising leadership development programming and advocacy
- Fulfill the University of Redlands mission by serving as an informal and formal mentor for students in support of preparing students for life beyond college and living lives of meaning impact and joy
- Proactively engage with advisors of faith-based spiritual and religious clubs/organizations and affinity groups for partnership in supporting holistic student success and wellbeing
- Partner with the Office of Inclusion and Community staff and campus partners to develop student leadership and spiritual or religious student club/organization traditions (e.g. interfaith dinner) signature events and programs that reflect the University of Redlands community
- Design facilitate and promote inclusive programming that fosters intergroup dialogue spiritual development and empowerment and ethical leadership and reflection.
- Plan participate in and celebrate interfaith and multi-faith engagement including interreligious programs community services signature events services and programs and social justice outreach
- Participate in and assist with ceremonial needs such as campuswide reflections celebrations campus tradition signature events and programs ceremonies memorials and vigils (e.g. convocation commencement student orientation Summer Bridge Bulldog Civic Engagement and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Week).
- Actively partner in engaging students through the student involvement fair Bulldog Beginnings Bulldog Pathways Bulldog Civic Engagement Collective Meditation Room residential campus experience the first year and sophomore year experience campuswide speaker/lecture series admissions and recruitment events Homecoming and other divisional campus and systemwide initiatives.
- Collaborate with campus departments on related programming and events.
- Maintain and publish an interfaith calendar of observances and advise campus partners on inclusive practices (e.g. dietary academic accommodations considerations)
Student and Community Support Wellbeing & Advocacy:
- Serve as a confidential resource to students staff faculty and administrators related to Title IX and Equity support and other privileged communications
- Partner with campus departments to connect students with appropriate campus resource referrals to support student wellbeing and success
- Serve as a member of the Campus Assessment Response and Education Team and supports the Dean of Students and Human Resources in providing support to students and community members in crisis distress experiencing trauma loss or grief.
Community & External Partnerships:
- Partner with students staff faculty and campus partners to ensure that pluralistic inclusive innovative community programming opportunities to reflect on societal and global issues is available and accessible on campus and support meaningful student experiences including holiday observances mission-driven alternative break societal impact through interfaith service leadership and civic engagement experiential opportunities that foster transformational common ground unity and community impact across difference.
- Collaborates with the Office of Community Service-Learning to support or partner with faculty and/or campus departments (e.g. orientation residential life) who wish to make curricular and co-curricular connections to the intersection of spirituality community volunteer service or internship experience projects and/or programs in support of student experiential learning.
- Engage in active outreach to students of all faiths and of no religious or spiritual commitment.
- Sustain and grow the Chaplains visibility and resources by building and nurturing strong relationships with students faculty staff administrators parents alumni local community members and donors.
- Cultivate and sustain relationships with interfaith local and regional religious and spiritual leaders and spiritual practitioners to extend support to students community engagement and collaborative programmatic partnerships with faith-based organizations committed to civic responsibility social justice inclusion and belonging.
Administrative and Operational Leadership:
- Develop a holistic and comprehensive student-centered vision mission and goals for the Chaplaincy at the University of Redlands
- Identify spaces on campus that cultivate spaces for reflection mindfulness and community connection (e.g. Chapel Labyrinth Meditation Room LaFourcade Community Garden Hall of Letters Rose Garden SURF Garden)
- Manage and responsibly steward financial resources to support programming initiatives student and community engagement including oversight of the Omar E. Robbins Endowed Fund
- Partner with staff in the Office of Inclusion and Community Campus Life and Marketing and Communications to establish a digital website presence and marketing of events programs and resources
Divisional Leadership & Service:
- Serve as an active member of the Bulldog Wellbeing Collective
- Attend the Office of Inclusion and Community staff meetings
- Participate in monthly divisional meetings and retreats
Qualifications Guidelines:
- Ordained by and in good standing with a religious community.
- A Master of Divinity degree or Masters in pastoral theology
- Demonstrated commitment to equity inclusion and inclusive religious/spiritual practices.
- Experience coordinating and facilitating intergroup dialogue community reflection and the examination of social justice issues.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience fostering interfaith collaboration with a demonstrated understanding of the role of religious and spiritual life within the University of Redlands residential liberal arts undergraduate and graduate institution
- Experience engaging with University of Redlands students staff and faculty in the promotion of interfaith justice and civic engagement initiatives dialogue and reflection ethical leadership programming and/or pastoral support/service that fosters inclusion community and belonging
- Experience leading mission-driven community service and volunteer experiences grounded in spiritual empowerment
- Excellent demonstrated organizational communication and administrative skills
- Willing to work nights and weekends and provide community support during tragedies (e.g. student death)
Required Knowledge Skills Abilities and/or Competencies:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to convey information clearly compassionately and professionally to students staff faculty and campus partners.
- Demonstrated ability to navigate sensitive situations with discretion emotional intelligence care and professionalism while maintaining credibility and trust.
- Ability to build and maintain respectful collaborative and collegial relationships across diverse roles and areas of the institution.
- Deep knowledge of diversity equity and inclusion practices in higher education with a demonstrated commitment to integrating these values into all aspects of the role.
- Demonstrated ability to design implement and evaluate programs workshops and initiatives that support student engagement wellbeing and learning.
- Proven ability to lead mentor and provide constructive feedback to students using inclusive and developmentally appropriate leadership frameworks to support holistic student development leadership skills and success.
- Strong organizational planning and project management skills including the capacity to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Ability to align role-specific responsibilities with the broader mission values and goals of the University of Redlands.
- Ability to learn and apply institutional policies and procedures particularly those related to risk management program implementation and fiscal stewardship.
- Commitment to continuous professional development in spirituality world religions interfaith leadership and equity and inclusion practice.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A graduate degree in divinity or pastoral theology
- Training in interfaith dialogue pastoral counseling or spiritual direction (e.g. CPE certification).
- Experience engaging with University community especially college students in an advisory programmatic or ministry role.
- Experience designing and delivering student-centered programming that fosters engagement and community.
Term:
- Initial employment term is one year and subject renewal. 9 months/year. Time away is negotiated at time of appointment.

Working Conditions:
Standard office and field setting. Duties performed are primarily in an office environment while sitting at a desk or computer workstation or in meetings. At least minimal environmental controls to assure health and comfort.

HIRING RANGE:Anticipated hiring range is near or at the minimum of the classification commensurate with candidates education experience skills and training. The University of Redlands is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range considers the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience skills knowledge abilities education licensure and certifications and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is defined as the Full Pay Range. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is defined as theHiring Range. Placement within the Hiring Range is determined by internal equity and relevant qualifications.
BACKGROUND CHECK:Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL EXAMS:For certain positions typically in Public Safety Facilities Athletics and Information Technology Services departments employment is contingent upon a candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift in excess of 50 Safety Officers in addition to a pre-employment physical exam will also be required to pass a psychological evaluation.
