The Chicago High School for the Arts seeks a Dean of Students in the Administrative department for the 2025 - 2026 school year.

General Summary:

We are ChiArts. Chicagos first public arts high school. The Chicago High School for the Arts (ChiArts) develops the next generation of diverse artistically promising scholar-artists through intensive pre-professional training in the arts combined with a comprehensive college preparatory curriculum. Over 2500 hours of tuition-free pre-professional arts training are provided to every scholar-artist from freshman year to graduation. Our alumni are pioneers as scientists educators entrepreneurs and change-makers and from millions of plays on Spotify to touring with a dance company to published writing to making art that challenges and entertains us on stage and screen they are blazing new pathways.

Position Summary:

The Dean of Students provides overall general student management as it relates to attendance truancies and behavior modification/interventions. The Dean takes responsibility for promoting student conduct expectations implementing behavior management practices and providing discipline with consequences that align with ChiArts goals and mission. Significant emphasis is placed on clear and effective communication of expectations policies protocols interventions and consequences to students families staff and external stakeholders. The Dean of Students also supervises the schools security team ensuring a safe supportive and well-managed environment for all students and staff.

Qualifications

Responsibilities:

  • Embrace and promote the ChiArts vision mission educational approach and goals
  • Provide direction and support to the ongoing development of a healthy school culture characterized by high expectations for student academic artistic social and emotional development.
  • Utilize the Chicago Public Schools Code of Conduct to determine the appropriate course of action for behavior incidents.
  • Address student discipline issues including facilitating parent meetings mediating student conflicts and ensuring student discipline is accurately entered into CPSs Verify system as needed.
  • Discharge appropriate disciplinary measures and interventions to students who warrant it.
  • Counsel students in matters of behavior attendance and tardiness and make every effort to steer students and families to adhere to school expectations.
  • Communicate regularly with school faculty and staff regarding the school expectations as it relates to matters of attendance tardiness and discipline.
  • Work proactively with teachers and staff to improve classroom and management skills within and beyond the classroom.
  • Communicate regularly and appropriately by way of telephone email and meetings with families of students who are not meeting school expectations for attendance and discipline.
  • Implement programs that empower students to resolve conflicts through restorative justice efforts conflict resolutions and peer mediation.
  • Promote student and school community understanding of their rights and responsibilities as a member of ChiArts.
  • Supervise the cafeteria during lunch periods as well as arrange and monitor the detention process.
  • Be highly visible around campus before and after school during lunch periods and transitions.
  • Monitor and ensure the accuracy of tardy to school protocols record keeping and remediation.
  • Maintain a professional awareness of Illinois School Law and regulations regarding child welfare.
  • Supervise and provide direction to the security team ensuring alignment with school safety protocols and student behavior expectations
  • Participate in some weekend and evening events.
  • Assist the principal and assistant principal as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Type 75certification preferred
  • Bilingual Preferred (Spanish)
  • Masters degree in an education-related field preferred
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in a high school setting with a demonstrated record of leadership and effective school service
  • Experience working with students families and teachers to execute disciplinary consequences and support students in meeting behavioral and attendance expectations.
  • Experience or willingness to work in a highly visible and results-oriented environment.
  • Excellent organizational written planning and implementation skills.

Working Conditions:

Job Hazards: This position requires a fingerprint and background check conducted by Chicago Public Schools.

Travel Requirements:This position does not require travel as part of the job responsibilities; however travel may be required to attend professional development/conferences.

Salary and Benefits:

Full-Time position.

Pay will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
