Summary: The Surgical First Assistant is a trained medical professional who provides safe quality surgical assisting and patient care through the utilization of appropriate treatment processes and effective communication with all involved in the care and support of patients.
The Surgical First Assistant has a solid understanding of human anatomy at the advanced level; has honed surgical skills such as suturing knot tying of suture and the proper use of surgical instruments. He/she knows how to safely position patients and must be knowledge in an extensive variety of surgical diseases. He/she performs other duties as the surgeon directs and has the training to evaluate the surgical patient to assure the best possible outcome for the patient.
Principal Responsibilities:
1. Will participate and maintain a culture within The Corvallis Clinic that is consistent with the content outlined in the Service and Behavioral Standards document. To this end employee will be expected to read have familiarity and embrace the principles contained within.
2. Sets up and checks operating room equipment oxygen and care supplies. Assists with operating room preparation.
3. Directs patient flow and preparation of patients for surgical procedures.
4. Identifies patient for name procedure and correct surgical site.
5. Positions patient for comfort on surgical table and attach monitors.
6. Performs sterile skin prep.
7. Maintains surgical record including lot numbers medication s and lens cards for reorder.
8. Escorts patient to PAR area after procedure.
9. Assists in room turnovers final clean up at end of day stocking of supplies and preparations for next day surgery.
10. Improves the quality of care through continuing education and self-evaluation of the effectiveness of care. This includes attendance/participation in most in-services/department meetings and remaining current on department policies and procedures.
11. Actively participates in cleaning of shared work areas and keep patient care rooms clean neat and stocked.
12. Participates in orientation and training of new employees.
Education Licensure and Experience:
1. Physician Assistant RNFA with current certification OR current certification as a Certified First Assistant (CFA through the National Board of Surgical Technologists and Surgical Assistants) OR Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA through the National Surgical Assistant Association)
2. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or ability to complete BLS certification within 90 days of hire required.
3. Performance of a minimum of 140 cases in the Surgical First Assistant role and two (2) years of recent experience.
Knowledge and Skills:
1. Ability to work well with providers and other staff.
2. Ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously in a busy fast-paced environment while maintaining quality of work.
Physical Demands:
Full-time
