The Bus Driver is responsible for safely transporting passengers to their destinations while providing exceptional customer service. This role involves following scheduled routes ensuring passenger safety maintaining a clean and operational vehicle and adhering to traffic and safety regulations.
Position Criteria:
- Valid Iowa drivers license required
- Class D (chauffeur) license with the 3 (passenger) endorsement required
- School Bus Driver Authorization may obtain after hire
Performance Criteria:
- Operate the bus safely and responsibly on assigned routes following local state and federal laws and regulations and organizational policies.
- Follow designated routes accurately in accordance with time schedules and stops.
- Perform routine operator maintenance to including but not limited to: pre/post inspections sweeping interior wiping upholstery cleaning windshields reporting equipment defects and presenting bus for maintenance.
- Assist in providing the necessary safeguards to prevent loss of or damage to property or failure of mechanical equipment. Report any mechanical issues to the operations department.
- Greet and assist passengers withholding and uploading including those with special needs (e.g. wheelchair users in boarding and exiting the bus)
- Maintain a friendly approachable attitude and respond to passenger inquiries in a polite manner.
- Enforce passenger safety rules including the use of seatbelts (if applicable) and the restriction of unsafe behavior.
- Maintain appropriate student behavior on the bus and report policy infractions as appropriate.
- Adjust routes based on traffic conditions weather or emergency detours and inform passengers of any significant changes.
- Communicate with dispatch or supervisors regarding route changes delays or any incidents.
- Monitor passengers to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
- Keep and handle all student information in a confidential manner.
- Handle emergency situations appropriately and calmly including assisting passengers in the event of an accident or other incidents.
- Complete and maintain accurate records including mileage logs incident reports and time sheets.
- Report accidents traffic violations or other safety-related incidents to supervisors.
- Participate in & complete all training pertaining to the job.
- Assist operations department as needed and perform other duties as assigned.
