Job Description

POSITION:Pupil Transportation Van/Type 10 Vehicle Cover/Trip Driver

LOCATION:Transportation Department

HOURS:Varies/On Call As Needed (Part-time up to 30 hours a week)

WORK DAYS: Monday - Friday and Weeknds included

SALARY:$20.62 - $29.40 Per Hour (Range D)

BENEFITS:Medical Dental Vision and Optional Insurances Available

Job Purpose Statement/s: The position of Pupil Transportation Van/Type 10 Vehicle Cover/Trip Driver transports students to and from school and to school related activities within the District and outside the District when regular drivers are absent and/or covering field trips/athletic trips that regular drivers cannot do when a van is needed for transporting small groups or students with physical disabilities or other special needs. This position will drive a van or other type 10 vehicle (as defined by ODE and ODOT) equipped for transporting students.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Conduct daily pre-trip inspection of vehicle: fluid levels lights leaks belts brakes signals horn wipers mirrors heaters and overall condition securement and cleanliness of vehicle.
  • Make minor adjustments and report major problems to a supervisor and/or shop.
  • Maintain a safe and orderly environment for students and authorized passengers through effective student management techniques.
  • Maintain a safe and clean vehicle by sweeping vacuuming fueling and washing as appropriate.
  • Availability: Must be available on short notice at early hours to cover routes as needed. Must be regularly available at other times which could include evenings to drive activity trips as needed.

Regular Van Routes:

  • Safely drive a van or other type 10 vehicle on an assigned route loading and unloading students at predetermined stops.
  • Safely transport students to and from school within an established time schedule.
  • Maintain discipline in the van or other type 10 vehicle issuing referrals for persistent behavior problems and reporting most critical behavior problems to a supervisor immediately.

Special Van Routes:

  • Safely drive a van or other type 10 vehicle.
  • Assist students in entering and exiting the van or other type 10 vehicle.
  • Monitor physical well-being and needs students with special needs during transport.
  • Report on student behavior and physical needs to parents and teachers.
  • Develop routes and specific stops based on home location and student destination.

Extra-Duty Van Routes:

  • Safely drive a van or other type 10 vehicle on activity runs which can include driving in unfamiliar areas mountain driving freeway driving extended trips night driving and driving on congested and busy streets.

Other Job Functions:

  • Maintain records as required: including but not limited to student counts student drop-off points route times pre-trip inspections odometer readings and student disciplinary actions.
  • Report mechanical problems to technicians and/or appropriate staff.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements - Qualifications:

  • Experience Required: Sufficient driving experience to demonstrate the ability to safely transport up to nine students at a time including people with special needs.
  • Skills Knowledge and/or Abilities Required:

Skill in operating a van or other Type 10 vehicle in a safe and lawful manner during varying weather road and traffic conditions and the ability to recognize when conditions are unsafe for operation.

Operate a vehicle for extended periods of time for over-the-road special activity trips and to drive safely in unfamiliar surroundings varying from congested city streets to mountain roadways.

Develop rapport with students and maintain discipline among students while they are being transported.

Ability to be aware of and respond promptly to the physical and emotional needs of students with disabilities.

Ability to think clearly and make sound decisions in unusual and emergency situations.

Knowledge of traffic signs and devices safe motor vehicle driving techniques and how to use city and highway maps.

Knowledge of first aid and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation techniques.

Ability to learn and apply the laws rules and regulations governing: the operation of a van or other type 10 vehicle traffic safety passenger loading and unloading and student discipline. Learn specific bus routes complete scheduled routes in a timely manner and adjust to periodic changes in schedules and routes. Recognize potential mechanical and safety equipment problems and be able to explain these problems to mechanics.

Ability to write legibly and to make clear brief factual written and oral reports.

Ability to establish and maintain professional and effective working relationships.

  • Education Required: High School Diploma or equivalent and ability to comprehend and apply motor vehicle laws and state and district student transportation policies and procedures.
  • Certifications and/or Testing Required: Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance. Current Oregon Driving License in good standing. Possession of or ability to obtain following a period of training first aid card and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation card.
  • Special Requirements: Requires a moderate degree of physical strength and stamina good vision and hearing and prolonged sitting while driving. Some positions require frequent bending and lifting associated with the loading and unloading of students with physical disabilities and kneeling during securements and pre-trip inspections. Position will be exposed to noise and inclement weather and occasional exposure to bodily fluids. This position will cover routes whe regular drivers are absent and cover field or athletic trips when regular drivers are not available and a smaller vehicle is needed. Positions involved in the transport of students with physical disabilities may require additional specialized training.

Terms of Employment: Salary and work year to be established by the Board.

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Boards Policy on Evaluation of Support Staff Personnel.
