Job Description

Indigenous Art & Retail Coordinator

Pay Grade(s): 10/11 ($33.29 DOE)

Purpose: Aan Ht is more than a retail space its a place where culture community and commerce meet. We are seeking a highly motivated and culturally grounded individual who has deep knowledge of Indigenous art particularly Tlingit & Haida art and experience in retail operations. The ideal candidate understands how to build meaningful relationships with artists negotiate respectfully and ensure their work is showcased and sold in a way that honors its value and story.

This role is rooted in a values-based work environment that honors Indigenous culture and entrepreneurship. Essential Functions. An individual in this role must be able to perform the following functions with or without reasonable accommodation:

  • Identify and work with Tlingit & Haida (and other Indigenous) artists to purchase high-quality artwork jewelry textiles and traditional items for retail.
  • Negotiate purchases with a clear understanding of fair compensation cultural value and artist sustainability.
  • Manage the retail display of Indigenous art and goods to create an engaging and educational experience for customers.
  • Maintain strong inventory practices and coordinate with our internal production team for printed and engraved merchandise.
  • Support and uplift artist visibility through in-store features signage and storytelling.
  • Train staff on Indigenous art styles and artist background to ensure informed customer service.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Skills & Abilities. A comprehensive set of capabilities required to perform job tasks effectively:

  • Knowledge of Tlingit & Haida art forms and broader Indigenous artistic traditions.
  • Understanding of cultural protocols and respectful engagement with Indigenous artists.
  • Strong skills in relationship-building and artist collaboration.
  • Experience negotiating purchases with fairness and cultural sensitivity.
  • Ability to create engaging educational retail displays that tell a cultural story.
  • Proficiency in inventory management and retail systems.
  • Strong communication skills including training staff on art and artist background.
  • Ability to travel regionally to source artwork and build artist connections.
  • Understanding of artist sustainability and equitable compensation models.
  • Visual merchandising skills with attention to cultural and aesthetic detail.
  • Ability to collaborate with internal teams including production and marketing.
  • Commitment to supporting Indigenous entrepreneurship and community values.

Minimum Qualifications (education experience skills):

  • Associates degree in Art Indigenous Studies Business or a related field; OR an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Tlingit & Haida art and broader Indigenous artistic traditions including materials styles and cultural significance.

Preferred Qualifications (education experience skills):

  • Familiarity with Northwest Coast art forms and styles (e.g. formline crest-based traditions).
  • Experience in retail merchandising or arts administration.
  • Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills rooted in respect and relational accountability.
  • Tlingit or Haida cultural knowledge is highly preferred.
  • Ability to manage inventory pricing and vendor relationships.

Physical Requirements. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job with or without reasonable accommodation:

  • The majority of work is performed in a professional setting and is generally requiring routine walking standing bending and carrying of items weighing less than 40 lbs.

Work Environment. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job:

  • Travel on small aircraft or ferry may be required.
  • Certain positions at Tlingit & Haida may have exposure to certain hazardous materials or conditions. The supervisor will review these if applicable.
