The Wellcome Trust is a global charitable foundation. We improve health for everyone by funding science leading policy and advocacy campaigns and building partnerships.

We plan to spend 16bn over the next ten years funding new discoveries in life health and wellbeing and taking on three global health challenges: mental health infectious disease and climate and health.

These challenges need the bold science we support but they wont be solved by science alone.

The Data for Science and Health (DSH) Digital Technology team is looking to recruit an Infectious Disease Technology Lead. The successful applicant will help develop shape and execute projects related to digital technology which advance the strategy of Wellcomes Infectious Disease Solutions Programme.

Where in Wellcome will I be working

You will be based within Data for Science & Health reporting to the Head of Digital Technology Climate and Health & Infectious Disease collaborating closely with colleagues within the Infectious Disease Solutions Programme to develop a vision for trustworthy data science initiatives to minimise the impact of infectious diseases in the most affected communities.

Data and software are at the heart of modern science and health. From new tools and methods in artificial intelligence computational modelling and analysis to policies and standards for data collection and sharing - the effective use of data and data science is key to delivering Wellcomes strategy. The Data for Science and Health team enables this by shaping and funding data science initiatives to advance Wellcomes mission.

What will I be doing

In this role youll develop design evaluate and execute projects related to digital technology which advance the objectives of Wellcomes Infectious Disease Solutions Programme. Youll draw on appropriate expertise across science health industry and funding sectors to develop a strategic view of the digital landscape - whether software analytics or infrastructure - needed to advance infectious disease research and development. Youll work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to identify opportunities shape funding approaches and translate strategic objectives into tangible solutions. This is a varied and exciting role which offers broad exposure across Wellcome including identifying strategic award opportunities relationship building with other funders and representing Data for Science and Health.

As a Technology Lead you will:

  • Lead and deliver digital innovation projects aligned with Wellcomes Infectious Disease Solutions strategy adopting an entrepreneurial and impact-driven approach.

  • Shape the digital landscape by integrating expertise from across disciplines (e.g. data science infectious disease wider life sciences) to inform and future-proof our technology strategy.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with colleagues across Wellcomes research programmes to share knowledge align priorities and foster joint innovation in digital health technologies.

  • Provide expert advice and oversight to funding activities supporting high-quality funding calls partnerships RfPs and technology investments with hands-on technical input.

  • Ensure accountability and quality by managing budgets risks and compliance while delivering clear high-impact outputs that support DSH and organisational goals.

  • Contribute to a diverse and inclusive team culture by managing team members in a matrix structure and actively promoting equity diversity and inclusion in all aspects of work.

Is this job for me

To be successful in this role youll have: Excellent knowledge of the current state of and trends in data and digital technologies in science and health. Technical knowledge experience or training relevant to our Infectious Disease Solutions programme would be advantageous.

Were especially interested in hearing from candidates with a background in leveraging advanced data analysis methods data science AI or software engineering and/or those with experience with platforms tools analytics infrastructure for infectious disease data.

  • Training in a quantitative discipline and/or a strong knowledge of current trends and best practices in digital technologies within the science and health sectors

  • Ability to deliver complex projects within large multi-stakeholder environments thriving in matrix structures and collaborating effectively across teams and organisations.

  • An analytical and entrepreneurial approach to identifying and pursuing high-value problems related to data and digital technologies which advance a broader strategy.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with proven ability to engage diverse audiences through effective listening writing and speaking.
