Job Description

Qualifications:

  • Massachusetts DESE certification in a related area
  • Five years successful teaching experience
  • Five years successful experience in administration across PreK-12 preferred
  • Masters degree minimum

Reports to: Deputy Superintendent Office of Teaching and Learning

Position Overview

The Senior Director of Teaching and Learning plays a critical leadership role in advancing instructional quality and academic innovation across the Public Schools of Brookline. This role ensures the implementation of high-impact teaching practices curriculum excellence data-driven interventions and effective professional development. The Senior Director collaborates across departments and with community partners to build inclusive equitable systems that support both student achievement and staff development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) & Student Support
  • Lead the development implementation and monitoring of a cohesive MTSS framework across the district.
  • Coordinate and support Student Intervention Teams (SITs) to ensure data-informed interventions and student success.
  • Oversee program evaluation with a focus on equity engagement and impact.

Teacher Induction & Mentoring & Educator Evaluation

  • Plan and lead New Teacher Orientation continuously refining the structure for maximum support and engagement.
  • Design and implement a robust mentoring program for both teachers and school administrators including ongoing support and professional development.
  • Evaluate and revise mentoring models to ensure clarity consistency and efficacy across schools.
  • Oversee the Educator Evaluation Process

Curriculum and Instruction

  • Oversee curriculum review cycles to ensure alignment with state standards equity goals and best instructional practices.
  • Provide districtwide coordination for MCAS administration and related instructional support.
  • Manage and update public-facing instructional materials to ensure they reflect current pedagogy accessibility and district values.

Grants and Funding

  • Lead the identification writing and management of federal state and local grants to support district initiatives.
  • Partner with the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Coordinator to secure funding and develop innovative CTE programs.

Strategic Planning & Reporting

  • Lead the writing implementation and progress monitoring of the Student Opportunity Act (SOA) plan.
  • Develop and maintain data dashboards to track student achievement and program impact (Open Architect).
  • Engage stakeholders in program evaluation and create roadmaps for continuous improvement.

Community and Higher Education Partnerships

Serve as district liaison for strategic community partnerships including:

Brookline Education Foundation

  • The Brookline Innovation Fund
  • Steps to Success Inc.
  • Boston University Consortium

Collaborate with these organizations on grants programming and initiatives that enhance teaching and learning.

Policy Research & Communications

  • Represent the Office of Teaching and Learning at the School Committees Policy Subcommittee providing guidance on instructional and equity-focused policy updates.
  • Review and recommend changes to policies related to teaching and learning to ensure alignment with district priorities and educational research.
  • Partner with the Deputy Superintendent and other senior leaders to ensure consistent aligned communication across the district.
  • Develop internal communication systems to support transparent and efficient collaboration between OTL and school staff.

Student Teacher & Graduate Programs

  • Oversee the placement and support of student teachers ensuring effective partnerships with colleges and universities.
  • Facilitate mentoring and professional learning opportunities for student teachers.
  • Manage the approval of graduate-level coursework for staff to ensure alignment with instructional goals.
  • Review and approve education-related research requests in alignment with district ethics and strategic priorities.
