Position Summary
The Special Education Teacher is a designated learning specialist responsible for the case management and provision of Special Education services to students from kindergarten through post high school. Teachers placed in Structured Classrooms teach in an elementary and/or secondary educational setting that is separate from the general education classroom which includes but is not limited to a Structured Learning Center an Alternative Program Instruction & Strategies classroom or an Alternative Learning Program & Strategies classroom.
Special Education Teachers assist the school district in carrying out the requirements of special education programs as required by State and Federal law through Child Find Evaluation and Identification as well as being responsible for compliance with instruction learning and student accommodation requirements under Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
Essential Functions
- Responsible for developing and implementing a structured and supportive program for students with significant developmental disabilities and/or social-emotional/ self-regulation needs. This includes providing academic instruction and special education case management and ensuring implementation of students Individual Education Plans.
- Responsible for planning and coordinating all educational activities within the assigned structured classroom.
- Select specific activities materials and methods as related to diagnostic findings and recommendations of the evaluation team.
- Review and/or modify curriculum and course requirements that are used in the program.
- Plan and implement developmentally appropriate practices consistent with the Districts primary program goals.
- Provide leadership to the intervention team in planning implementing monitoring and documenting the education activities for students enrolled within the program.
- Collaborate with team members and support the development implementation and review of functional behavioral assessments behavior plans and/or safety plans.
- Intervene with behavioral and discipline problems within the context of program structure.
- Develop the necessary written plans and procedural forms to ensure legal compliance with district policy and state and federal IDEA regulations.
- Collaborate with teachers and members of the building Multi-Disciplinary Team to provide the most appropriate services to all students placed in the structured classroom.
- Regularly and consistently communicate with parents guardians and designated outside professionals/agencies to discuss students progress and any concerns. Prepare and send home periodic written progress reports.
- Schedule direct and manage the activities of Instructional Assistants working with students placed in the program providing training as needed.
- Assist with personal management and care of students in the classroom who may have medical or self-care needs.
- Ensure that written reports and documents relevant to student participation in special education programs are completed on a timely basis.
- Ensure that academic and behavioral data relevant to student performance is collated and charted in an organized and efficient fashion.
- Consult with general education staff and support personnel to ensure that appropriate modifications and accommodations are provided for students participating within general education settings.
- Schedule students for time in inclusion opportunities as required to implement their IEP.
- Confer with parents administrators and other professionals to develop IEPs designed to promote students educational physical and social/emotional development.
- Maintain student records as required by the District and/or the school.

- Analytical and diagnostic skills to assess a students learning needs and translate such needs into an effective instructional plan for the student.
- Knowledge of child and adolescent development and ability to apply that knowledge to the selection and application of curriculum materials and instructional practices.
- Knowledge of second language acquisition.
- Ability to effectively communicate individual student plans and to coach and support other staff and teachers so that they may effectively implement their responsibilities under the plan.
- Ability to effectively communicate with parents students and other staff verbally and in writing.
- Ability to utilize technology to aid instruction assessment and learning.
- Ability to demonstrate professionalism in all situations.
Minimum Qualifications
- Successful completion of a teacher certification program at an accredited college or university.
- Current TSPC Teaching Licensure with appropriate Special Education endorsement (or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire).
- Successful teaching experience and/or demonstrated potential to effectively teach in a special education environment.
- Experience working with students who exhibit behavioral/social/emotional challenges.
- Experience developing and implementing Individualized Education Plan goals and objectives.
- Experience working successfully with culturally diverse families and communities or otherwise demonstration of a commitment to strengthening engagement of a diverse community and skill in communicating with a diverse population.
- Demonstrated commitment to collaboration and effectiveness in working within a professional learning community.
- Evidence of continuous professional learning and a commitment to participate in professional growth and self-reflection on professional practice.
- Within 90 days of hire: Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in District-adopted deescalation restraint and seclusion methodology as assessed by a certified trainer.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable
- Successful completion of criminal history records check as required by law.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bilingual Spanish-English.
- Strong lens on educational equity and serving the needs of diverse students.
- Understanding of Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS).
- Experience supporting student behaviors and understanding of restorative practices and social-emotional learning.

Start date: 8/25/2025
New staff in-service will be held 8/19/2025-8/20/2025 and will be paid in addition to contract days.
Student Services training will be held 8/21/2025 and will be paid in addition to contract days.
