Job Description

Title of the position: Substitute Teacher

Organization: Detroit Cristo Rey High School/The Berkley Shared Time Program

Department: School Faculty

Reports to: Principal

Type: Contract

General Description

This position is required to support a teacher who is out on personal or medical leave. The duration of the assignment is variable and dependent on the permanent teacher status. All requirements are consistent with the permanent teacher requirements.

Regional Building Substitute Teacher

The Berkley Shared Time program recognizes the need for substitute teachers to cover Shared Time classes in the event of a teacher absence. As such Berkley will work with select partner schools to assign regional building substitute teachers to select partner schools.

Regional building substitutes will follow the protocol listed below:

  • If a substitute teacher is needed for a Shared Time class at the regional subs home base they will be assigned to that position.
  • If no Shared Time subs are needed at the home base and a substitute is needed within the region for a Shared Time class the regional substitute will be assigned to that substitute position.
  • If no Shared Time substitutes are needed the regional substitute may fill in for a partner school teacher with the exception of religion classes.
  • If no substitutes are needed the regional substitute may be assigned duties within the school that are not of religious nature.

Note:

  • Regional building substitute teachers may be scheduled to sub for other teachers in advance; all efforts will be made to confirm with partner principals.
  • Regional substitute teachers may be asked to be long term substitute teachers. Expectations for Regional Substitute teachers
  • Carryout planned lessons left by the classroom teacher. Plan additional lessons and enhance lessons as needed.
  • Follow building health and safety protocols.
  • Keep accurate attendance and grades for classes.
  • Remain attentive and engaged during sub assignments.
  • Remain at the building for the duration of the school day.
  • Arrive at the school before your scheduled start time.
  • Reflect thoughtfully on teaching practices.
  • Actively contribute to building and district school improvement efforts.
  • Give detailed feedback to teachers and supervisors about their classes.
  • Limit personal device use and other personal activities to breaks periods.

As a Teacher at Detroit Cristo Rey and as adults we are role models for our students. All teachers are expected to dress and behave in a professional manner at all times especially when in front of a student(s) and communicating with parents.

Full-time Teaching assignments encompass teaching six classes daily administering one Duty period (study hall lunch duty assisting the Title One teacher subbing for one period etc.) and utilizing one assigned preparation period. Part-time teaching assignments range from 2-4 50-minute classes. There may be a duty period required depending on the number of classes taught. The Teacher will collaborate with teachers of the same subject to ensure alignment and continuity of material as well as with all other teachers for best practice sharing of techniques technology use and consistency of message regarding student expectation and success. The Teacher is expected to track and communicate student performance suggest and support strategic initiatives to help increase the academic offerings and performance of the student body as well as all other tasks and responsibilities as required. Teachers report to the Principal; however they will meet with the Academic Assistant Principal and Dean of Students regularly throughout the school year. They will also work very closely with the Corporate Work Study team members to ensure a positive balance between work and school for each student. When required the Teacher will also work with the School Counselor to ensure any student concerns that are not academic-related are communicated and addressed.

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Prepare for each class (Annual plan Unit plans a syllabus plan lessons correct papers conversations with parents & students)
  • Submit weekly Lesson Plans
  • Prepare and Lead Parent Teacher Conferences (3 times a year)
  • Attend all Faculty Meetings
  • Develop and Execute a Classroom Management Strategy maintain discipline & a positive atmosphere in the classroom
  • Learn and utilize the on-line grading system
  • Offer an Extracurricular Activity
  • Attend all required Fundraising Events
  • Work one week of the Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP) Summer Training program in August
  • Attend the morning assembly (starting at 7:15) and assist with the check-in of assigned students

Requirements

Bachelors Degree minimum in subject matter

Teachers Certification

Highly Qualified status preferred

Experience with High School Classroom environment (or equivalent)

Sensitivity to the ethnic racial and religious backgrounds of the student body

Proficient in MS Office and experience with Student Database systems

Good communication and interpersonal skills

Effectively communicate with students parents school staff and others in a calm and respectful manner at all times.
