JOB SUMMARY

The job of the School Support Assistant is to perform a variety of specialized duties to assist school operations in the daily supervision of students performing a variety of school level and classroom clerical tasks in support of the instructional process. This position also assists other personnel as needed to ensure an efficient and effective work environment including performing substitute teaching duties under emergency situations.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

All positions require selected candidates to be fingerprinted and successfully pass a criminal background check. Additional minimum required qualifications for this position are:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent
  2. Hold or obtain CPR/First Aid certification with in six months of hire
  3. Ability to perform basic math including calculations using fractions percentages and ratios
  4. Knowledgeable of age-appropriate activities; stages of child development; classroom management techniques; developing effective lesson plans; and planning and managing time effectively
  5. Ability to operate standard office equipment (e.g. phone copier scanner fax machines etc.)

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Adapts classroom work under the direction of the teacher and paraeducator to provide a method to support and reinforce lesson plans
  2. Administers tests and evaluations under supervision of teacher (e.g. DRA DIBELS observational data for IEP goals etc.) monitors student progress
  3. Implements students learning and behavior plans to meet students social and behavioral interventions health care plans and ensure compliance with IEPs
  4. Confers with teachers assisting in evaluating student progress and implementing student objectives. Provides appropriate classroom intervention with students under the Teachers direction (e.g. booster groups individual instruction small group instruction etc.) improving student learning and academic success
  5. Lead small groups; learn through play; communicate orally and in writing; and adhere to safety practices
  6. Monitors individual and groups of students in a variety of settings (e.g. classroom library playground activities lunch and recess field trips bus boarding and exiting etc.) providing a safe and positive learning environment. Operate physical education equipment and playground activities using standardized methods
  7. Work under direct supervision using standardized procedures; provide information and advise others; operate within a defined budget
  8. Prepares teaching materials and related reports (e.g. grades attendance anecdotal records etc.) to implement lesson plans and document student progress
  9. Reports incidents (e.g. fights suspected child abuse suspected substance abuse etc.) to maintain the personal safety of students provide a positive learning environment and adhere to Education Code administrative and school policies
  10. Performs record keeping and clerical functions (e.g. scheduling copying data recording answering telephone responding to security doorbell etc.) to support the teacher and administrator
  11. Assists other personnel as required and needed (e.g. instructors site administration paraprofessionals etc.) ensuring an efficient and effective work environment; schedule activities and meetings; gather collate and classify data; identify and create action plans to resolve issues as they arise
  12. Disinfect playground areas between student use
  13. Utilize resources from other work units to meet goals and objectives
  14. Work with frequent interruptions; adapt to changing work priorities; be attentive to detail; read a variety of manuals write documents following prescribed formats and present information to others
  15. Communicate effectively with diverse individuals and groups of people while maintaining confidentiality and building positive working relationships with employees and stakeholders
  16. Support a team environment by collaborating with own and other work units to perform the duties of the position effectively
  17. Participate in various meetings to receive and convey information
  18. Maintains regular and predictable attendance to fulfill job requirements effectively and efficiently
  19. Perform other duties as assigned including supervising students in a classroom setting to implement emergency substitute lesson plans

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The usual and customary methods of performing the jobs functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting carrying pushing and pulling some climbing and balancing some stooping kneeling crouching and crawling and some fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 40% sitting 30% walking and 30% standing. The job is performed in a generally hazard free environment but may include some temperature extremes (i.e. recess supervision etc.).
