Summary of Position

Lead Histotechs are responsible for overseeing the daily operations of a growing anatomic pathology laboratory. Responsible for ensuring the laboratory is performing at the level it should be meeting all goals and the quality of results being reported are at the appropriate level meeting all necessary Quality Control (QC) guidelines. Working with Histotechnicians I II III; Histotechnician Trainees and Lab Aides to resolve any conflicts track employee hours and may schedule employees time. Working with upper management to ensure all policies and procedures are carried out and that the laboratory meets all necessary regulatory guidelines.

Key Job Elements

  • Provides oversight for routine histology functions inclusive of processing embedding microtomy and staining under the supervision of a general supervisor.
  • Oversees daily routine laboratory operations to ensure that quality standards and turnaround time are met.
  • Maintains quality control standards within CAP CLIA and NY state guidelines.
  • Performs personnel coaching.
  • May be responsible for scheduling employees.
  • Maintains established performance and production standards.
  • Maintains responsibility for providing daily supervision of high complexity test performance by testing employees.
  • Assures that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratorys established performance specifications.
  • Provides orientation to all laboratory employees.
  • Evaluates the competency of all laboratory personnel and ensures that the employees maintain their competency to perform procedures.
  • The procedures for evaluation of the competency of the employees must include but are not limited to: Direct observations of routine patient test performance including patient preparation if applicable specimen handling processing and testing;
  • Review of quality control records proficiency testing results and preventative maintenance records.
  • Direct observation of the performance of instrument maintenance and function checks;
  • Assessment of problem-solving skills.
  • Coordinates workflow on a daily basis to ensure timely analysis reporting of patient samples and handling the daily/weekly/monthly scheduling including lab rotations.
  • Regulates all Quality Assurance (QA)/Quality Inspection (QI)/Quality Control (QC) to ensure laboratory standards and regulations are maintained.
  • Ensures the lab has adequate inventories of reagents and supplies.
  • Assists with the selection training mentoring and performance evaluation of the lab team.
  • Resolves employee relations issues and recommends disciplinary action when required. Initiates disciplinary action when control results exceed defined acceptance limits.
  • Acts as the first point of contact on technical procedural and policy questions. Keeps the team informed of new processes and general updates.

Qualifications

Knowledge/Experience

  • Associate in Science Degree or Equivalent.
  • 5 years experience in an anatomical pathology laboratory.
  • HT HTL (ASCP) certification preferred.
  • NY DOH Certification in HT PA CLT or MLT.
  • Manual dexterity to use common laboratory equipment and perform sterile techniques as required.
  • Willingness to work overtime is required.
  • Demonstrated skills in technical data interpretation and ability to troubleshoot.
  • Demonstrated ability to take and follow direction and to know who the resources are for their direction.
  • Ability to direct others as well as take direction from others.
  • Some overtime may be required.

Lab Specific Qualifications

  • Visual acuity (including color discrimination) and analytical skills to distinguish fine detail.
  • Ability to tolerate extensive periods seated and/or standing.
  • Must possess the ability to perform repetitive motion.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
  • May have exposure to extreme temperatures high noise levels fumes and bio-hazardous material/chemicals including formalin in the lab environment.
  • May be required to handle blood-borne pathogens and general laboratory reagents; handle live human specimens tissues and bodily fluids.
