PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Perform classroom/office duties for the special education department as instructed by the department chairperson and assumes the daily duty of a special education campus aide if the need arises

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Certification Requirements

  • High school graduate or GED equivalent
  • Eligible to obtain an Educational Aide certificate issued by the State Board of Educator Certification
  • Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check

Knowledge and Skills

  • Proficient word processing and data entry skills
  • Ability to meet established deadlines
  • Ability to work well with campus staff
  • Effective organizational communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Knowledge of general office equipment
  • Ability to work with children with disabilities
  • Ability to remain calm in a stressful situation

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

(The following statements describe the general purpose and responsibilities assigned and should not be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities skills efforts or working conditions that may be assigned or skills that may be required.)

  • Notify parents/teachers/administrators of ARD meetings
  • Prepare a work folder for each special education student on campus to include copies of TAKS scores as well as psychological testing results and vocational information
  • Reschedule ARD meetings by mail or phone at the request of the department chairperson or parent
  • Confirm parent attendance at ARD meetings
  • Prepare ARD forms for meetings to include demographic and assessment information
  • Provide on a timely basis a list of special education students (to administrators teachers medical and counseling personnel) and copies of the modifications to each regular teacher
  • Process schedule changes and assures that students are following the new schedule
  • Assist students in the CMC center
  • Set up/maintain Individual Transition folders on all students ninth grade and above
  • Notify the special education office of withdrawals and changes in student data
  • Assist with vocational assessments as directed by the department chairperson
  • Relieve special education teachers to attend ARD meetings
  • Assist the special education staff by typing general correspondence making copies and aiding in the classroom as needed
  • Maintain all confidential files on students
  • Aid in defusing escalated students when necessary
  • Maintain correct and current schedules on all special education students
  • Make copies and distribute behavior management plans to administrators teachers and counselors
  • Submit requisitions for special education materials and supplies
  • Gather student data regarding discipline grades etc. for ARD Committees and administration
  • Coordinate and assist in the reporting of inventory for the special education office
  • Distribute copies of IEP to parents when not in attendance at the ARD meeting
  • Is responsible to director of special education for special education requirements
  • Perform other duties as assigned based on department needs
  • Must complete designated district technology proficiencies each year
  • Requires a basic knowledge of technology/computer skills
  • Ability to use personal computer to access district programs emails and other resources
  • Maintain a consistent professional demeanor and appearance
  • Ensure compliance with the Texas Educators Code of Ethics
  • Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Supervision and evaluation of district personnel is not a requirement of the position; however the supervision of students is required.

Equipment Used:

  • Office equipment personal computer printer calculator multi-line telephone software programs and peripherals copier fax and other equipment applicable to position

Mental Demands:

  • Ability to read concentrate communicate (verbally and written) interpret reason understand verbal instructions memorize coordinate compile compute
  • Work with frequent interruptions and maintain emotional control under stress

Physical Demands:

  • Frequent: Sitting standing walking climbing stairs and/or ramps balancing stooping kneeling crouching crawling pulling pushing reaching repetitive hand motions hearing speaking clearly visual acuity distinguishing colors driving traveling
  • Occasional: Lifting moderate 15-44 pounds

Environmental Factors:

  • Frequent exposure to temperature extremes (hot and cold) humidity extremes noise low or intense illumination vibration
  • Occasional exposure to biological hazards (communicable diseases bacteria insects mold fungi etc.)
  • Work alone work prolonged or irregular hours
