Job Description:

Civil Enforcement Division Civil Recovery Section

The Oregon Department of Justice is seeking applicants for an attorney position in the Civil Recovery Section of the Civil Enforcement Division. This position may be based in our Salem or Portland offices with opportunities for remote work. The Civil Recovery Section represents all state agencies boards and commissions in civil litigation probate collections and bankruptcy proceedings.

The successful applicant will represent state agencies in a wide variety of litigation in which the state is a plaintiff which may include claims arising from:

  • Contracts and Grant Agreement Disputes.

  • Damage to State Property.

  • Environmental Contamination.

  • Fraud and Overpayments.

  • Injunctive Relief.

  • Probate (including estates guardianships and conservatorships).

  • Real Property Disputes (including foreclosures and quiet title litigation).

  • Receiverships.

  • Wildfire litigation.

  • Active membership in good standing with the Oregon State Bar by the time of appointment.

  • At least five (5) years experience litigating cases in Oregon state or federal court including first chair trial experience.

  • Possess superior analytical advocacy research verbal communication and writing skills.

  • Strong work ethic.

  • Client counseling skills.

  • Collaborative work history with lawyers and non-lawyers.

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity equity and an inclusive working environment where diverse individual experiences and perspectives are valued and supported.

Desired Experience

  • Civil litigation experience including jury trials.

  • Commercial litigation experience.

  • Receivership experience.

  • Strong research and writing skills.

  • Experience representing clients.

  • Experience negotiating and resolving claims brought in civil actions.

  • Completion of each of the following tasks during a trial in state or federal court: Opening statement; Closing argument; Direct examination of a fact witness; Cross examination of a fact witness; Direct examination of an expert witness; Cross examination of an expert witness; and Jury selection.

  • Experience taking and defending depositions in state or federal court actions.

This OAJA-represented position will be filled at either the Assistant Attorney General or Senior Assistant Attorney General level salary range $8842.00 - $17168.00 per month depending primarily on years of legal practice experience and other factors. Employees who are Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) participating members will have their base salary increased by 6.95% and pay a 6% employee contribution to PERS; the salary range noted reflects base salary only.
