Distinguished Engineer Machine Learning Platform Foundations
The Capital One machine learning platform organization manages our cloud-based enterprise MLAI system providing users with development tools and runtime environments necessary to build and run machine learning and AI systems with large scale realtime and batch processing workloads. We are seeking a Distinguished Engineer who is passionate about working on large scale distributed systems to help develop foundational capabilities for our platform.
You will use your experience in building large scale and highly available systems to develop our shared control plane and fleet management framework as well as distributed compute infrastructure. Your foundational contributions will support our diverse offerings ranging from developer notebooks to model training to model inference and feature generation pipelines to pre-training and fine tuning Transformer architecture based models as well as generative AI inference applications. Your depth of expertise in technologies including Golang and Python programming languages gRPC and REST web service frameworks container (e.g. Kubernetes) and serverless (e.g. AWS Lambda) runtime environments cloud databases and computer security coupled with foundational knowledge in ML and AI domains will provide an amplifying technical element that is paramount to our teams success.
Responsibilities:
Define control and data plane architecture blueprints and develop implementations that help us realize a highly available large scale and a secure machine learning platform
Utilize programming languages like Go Python and Java open Source RDBMS and NoSQL databases container orchestration services including Kubernetes and a variety of AWS tools and services to develop highly performant solutions
Institute engineering and operational excellence standards and KTLO improvements for shared platform services
Lead a portfolio of diverse technology projects and collaborate with developers with experience ranging from distributed microservices to running large foundation models
Work cross-functionally with product and program management disciplines and stakeholder and partners across Capital One to help optimize business outcomes while driving towards strong technology solutions
Share your passion for staying on top of tech trends experimenting with and learning new technologies participating in internal & external technology communities and leading system design and code review sessions
Help elevate the Capital One Distinguished Engineering community and establish yourself as a go-to resource on given technologies and technology-enabled capabilities
Lead the way in creating next-generation talent mentoring internal talent and actively recruiting external talent to bolster the Capital One tech talent pool
Basic Qualifications
Bachelors Degree
At least 7 years of experience with application architecture and design patterns.
At least 5 years of experience with distributed databases microservice architectures and high availability systems
Preferred Qualifications
Masters Degree in Computer Science or a Masters Degree in Software Engineering
3 years of experience with AWS
5 years of experience designing and building large scale ML systems
Experience in modern programming languages and data processing frameworks

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.
Sales Territory: $239900 - $273800 for Distinguished EngineerCandidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidates offer letter.
This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI).
