Job Description

The Interdisciplinary Studies in Aquatic Resources Program invites applications for a Part Time Academic Instructor to teach one section (3 credits) of AQUA 202 (The Oceans Commons and Society) during the winter term of the 2025-26 academic year currently scheduled in-person on Monday and Wednesday mornings (W1/W2). This position is subject to final budgetary approval.

Course Number and Title: AQUA 202: The Oceans Commons and Society

Course Description:

The tragedy of the commons has been a reoccurring concept when discussing ocean resources. In this course students will encounter how social scientists study and understand the use of the resources in the oceans commons. The course will explore theoretical paradigms governance social class gender race fishing aquaculture and oil and gas. Students will gain a foundational understanding in social science approaches to issues relating to the aquatic resources.

About the Aquatic Resources Program

The Aquatics Resources Program at StFX explores water the environment sustainability climate change and how humans interact with and impact local to global resources. AQUA uses an interdisciplinary approach- combining natural and social science perspective - to motivate student engagement and foster understanding of water resource issues- both Marine and freshwater. We explore how water permeates our lives from the food we eat to the health of the Earths oceans and more how water shapes our world and how water sustains living organisms. Students majoring in Aquatic Resources may complete a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree.

Start and End Dates: January 1 2026 - April 30 2026

Delivery Mode: in-person

Duties

Part-Time Academic Instructor positions involve the normal duties related to the design and teaching of a university credit course including but not limited to preparation and delivery of course content; development administration and marking of assignments tests and exams; calculation and submission of grades; and holding regular office hours.

Qualifications

Applicants should have a completed Masters degree in a social science field or program directly related to the course; a PhD or ABD is preferred. The Program is seeking candidates who are committed to contributing to StFXs priorities of equity and inclusion as well as experience and an interest in undergraduate level teaching.
