Job Description

The Division of Pediatrics/Radiology within the UI Stead Family Department of Pediatrics seeks to hire an Assistant Research Scientist. The primary function of in this position is to develop a translational MR imaging research program focused on neuroinflammation in pediatric chronic diseases. The primary focus of this work would be the assessment of brain development across the lifespan in children with a variety of pediatric chronic diseases. This position would help to build and optimize research imaging protocols in small animals and human subjects to successfully a develop a translational MR imaging research program. This position would be housed within the Department of Pediatrics and include strong collaboration and support with the MR Research Facility. This position is also expected to develop image analysis pipelines for the analysis of magnetic resonance spectroscopy and glymphatics in small animals and humans. This will include the development of analysis tools to generate quantitative results from the acquired data. In addition this position will report the results from these efforts in scientific publications as well as support the writing and submission of grant applications.

This is a specified term position.

Duties to include:

Experiments Simulation Modeling or Theoretical Investigation:

  • Optimize imaging protocols for small animal and human magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) and glymphatics.
  • Identify and define problems solutions to which can be approached through a scientific research process.
  • Design and execute neuroimaging analysis pipelines and plans
  • Work independently on basic research tasks with oversight by Faculty or Principal Investigator (PI).
  • Contribute to documentation of equipment and procedures necessary for future/ongoing funding manuscripts and presentations.

Data/Research Analysis and Evaluation

  • Collect and perform statistical data analysis. Evaluate data to establish relevance to the problem or problems being investigated.
  • Develop and implement sophisticated MR image analysis pipelines for the analysis of MRS and glymphatics data in small animals and humans.
  • Compare results of scientific investigations to previously published work.

Dissemination of research results

  • In collaboration with the PI/research team prepare research results for publication in reports papers journals books grants and other media.
  • Contribute to the presentation of results in departmental seminars and professional meetings.

Research Proposal/Grants:

  • Work in tandem with the PI/research team to generate data for new grant proposals for research and obtain support for new and/or continuing research activities.
  • Participate in determining research priorities and planning programs of research.
  • Contribute to progress reports required by funding agencies.

Services:

  • Provide service to the scientific community University and General Public.
  • Review Submitted manuscripts and research proposals.
  • Consult and collaborate with research community.
  • May participate in national and international meetings within discipline at the discretion of the PI/research team.

Human Resources/Supervision:

  • Mentor trainees.
  • May provide functional and/or administrative supervision for staff.
  • Provide direction assignments feedback coaching and counseling to assure outcomes are achieved.

Education Requirements

A Ph.D. in an engineering or science field such as Biomedical Engineering Electrical Engineering Chemistry Physics or Computer Science is required.

Experience Requirements

  • Training in MR physics and image acquisition is required.
  • Expertise with brain MR imaging and analysis is required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Demonstrated strong analytical and data analysis skills are required.
  • Experience with scripting languages (e.g. Python and R studio) for the development of image analysis pipelines required.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with MR imaging/spectroscopy and glymphatics is highly desired.
  • Experience with both small animal imaging and human imaging is preferred
  • Prior success with grant applications and peer-reviewed publications is highly desired.
  • Knowledge of GE EPIC pulse programming environments is desired.
  • Prior experience with cluster computing is desired.
