This is a temporary position and there are no leave or retirement benefits offered with this position. Note: Permanent and time-limited NC State Government employees must separate from their permanent or time-limited position in order to work in a temporary position. All temporaries are limited to one NC State Government temporary assignment at a time.
Individuals hired into a temporary State job must be fully qualified for the job. This temporary position is located in Wilmington - New Hanover County.
STARBASE is the U.S. Department of Defenses premier youth program with a focus to motivate students to explore opportunities in Science Technology Engineering Art & Design and Math (STEAM) as they continue their Education. DoD STARBASE challenges participants to engage in STEAM through hands-on minds-on learning opportunities. The primary program focuses on 5th graders providing students with 25 hours of stimulating experiences on National Guard bases across the United States. DoD STARBASE Wilmington has been in operation since 2004 and makes contact with 1500 students each school year.
Job Order Hourly Rate of Pay: $25.00 (Based on education and/or years of relevant work experience reflected on the application).
This temporary position will be assigned to the Department of Public Safety. This position is located at 2221 Carolina Beach Rd Wilmington NC 28401.
STARBASE Instructors will:- Provide dynamic instruction to participating students utilizing a variety of strategies that build on students natural curiosity to explore experiment and discover- ensure hands-on minds-on learning (target student demographic is upper elementary age).
- Evaluate and improve curriculum operational practices and instructional methods.
- Provide individual attention and assistance to meet the varied needs of learners.
- Complete other non-teaching program-related projects and tasks as assigned.
- Design curriculum for and teach outreach projects summer camp programs after-school programs as scheduled.
- Ensure proper upkeep maintenance and security of STARBASE instructional resources materials and leaning spaces.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Competencies

- Bachelors Degree Minimum.
- Ample experience with lesson design and instruction to upper - elementary aged students.
- Must possess classroom management and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of STEAM subjects and the processes of the natural world.
